Fresh Off the Boat 4×03 Review: “Kids”

Once again, Louis and Jessica meddle with Marvin and Honey’s life. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this. Anytime the Huangs fear something about the group’s dynamic, they try to change things and it usually messes something up. This situation was a little more serious.

Marvin and Honey’s choice to have kids must’ve come as a shock to everyone because Marvin isn’t getting any younger and Honey isn’t the type to want kids, which makes the whole thing a huge step in their relationship. Going forward it’ll be interesting to see how the two deal with pregnancy and a baby since Marvin didn’t do anything when it came to taking care of Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, it was disappointing that the episode didn’t bring up how she felt about her dad having a baby with Honey. Hopefully it’ll come up later. One thing that took me by surprise is that Honey forgave the Huangs for changing Marvin’s mind about having a baby. It was a pretty serious violation of friendship and I thought she’d be more harsh. Goes to show how good of friends they are.

The Huangs thought they finally made it out of kid jail, but they were too optimistic. What’s crazy is the story behind that couch and how Eddie was delivered on it. It should be a precious heirloom for that reason, but they actually just really like the couch. A small, but insane, detail is that they had it in storage for fifteen years! That’s a lot of money they spent, even though they’re constantly talking about saving money. Then again, the Huangs don’t always make great decisions. As we saw, they were willing to stop their friends from having a baby just so they could sing karaoke together. Their unpredictability is part of what makes the show so exciting.

Two parents I didn’t expect to see were Eddie and Alison. It was funny to see them pretend like they were a happy couple in order to keep Evan from discovering that the two broke up. Poor Alison couldn’t tell him the truth and Eddie wasn’t going to be the bad guy. The horse scene was spot on what part of parenting looks like, smile and say nice things to your kid while you’re trying have an adult conversation. In the end they had to break the news to Evan and it was very much a parody on the divorce conversation. This led to the couch being destroyed by ice cream.

Side notes: This episode made Eddie seem like a bad boyfriend, which only made me root for Alison finally breaking up with him. Also, where does Eddie keep finding these animals. I want to see one of those scenes.

Last, but not least, is Grandma’s good luck charm, Emery. He’s finally found a use for his bad luck and that’s getting revenge on his grandma’s enemies. It was surprising that he was happy about her using him, but with the luck he’s having it’s probably nice for something good to come out of it even if it is revenge. An interesting idea would be for Emery to use that power himself to get his own revenge on anyone that messes with him.

Fresh Off the Boat airs Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
