TV Show Review: ‘Dexter’ Season 7 premiere

Tis’ the most wonderful time of the year: Dexter, along with his “Dark Passenger,” is back, and the first episode has set the nail biting tone for the whole season.

Let me just start off by saying that from the moment that I watched Dexter, it got me hooked. The plot was like nothing I had ever seen before; it was a pioneer for television shows, in which the audience rooted for the “bad guy.” Fast-forward seven years later, and the show still manages to give me goosebumps about every five seconds.

Last season left us hanging with Deb seeing Dexter kill Travis, the Doomsday Killer. The big question of season 7 was WWDD (what would Deb do). Season 7 starts with Dexter running away, but to what? or from who? Then, it takes a leap back to the scene of the crime where Deb demands answers. The fact that Deb didn’t buy any of it was such a relief!, I was crossing my fingers for it not to be another cliche move. The story was set up so well; you sort of got put in Deb’s shoes. The sympathy shifted from Dexter to Deb, which I personally believed was the best way for the story to come undone.

It seems we are going to see more of Captain LaGuerta. She coincidentally found one of Dexter’s blood slides at the scene of the crime where Travis supposedly committed suicide, but we all know that was Dexter’s doing . This raises so many questions because these slides were “only made by Sgt. James Doakes,” who is long dead now and is presumed to be the Bay Harbor Butcher.

This season is already leaving us with tragic moments; Detective Mike gets shot by what seems to be a Ukrainian mobster. Deb doesn’t waste anytime digging up old “Ice Truck Killer” files, and of course, Dexter’s “Dark Passenger” comes back. This was totally mind-blowing; your sister is highly suspecting you’re a serial killer, and you go and murder someone else. But, the Dark Passenger performs an impeccable killing as usual. Ending the episode, we see Deb waiting for Dex in his apartment with some evidence she had managed to dig up. With full disbelief and confused look in her eyes she asks him, “Did you kill all these people?” to a surprising answer Dexter replies, “Yes”.

Overall  all the elements of a typical Dexter episode were there, and kept you on the edge of your seat. I cannot wait for the next episode where they elaborate more on the Ukrainian mobster scene, and how Deb is going to help her brother fight “the beast” that’s in him.

FINAL GRADE: ★★★★★★★★★ (9/10 stars)
