When I picked up an advanced copy of Illuminae at BookExpo America in 2015, I never in a million years expected to fall in love with this sci-fi novel, and then series. Instead, I fell head-over-heels for this incredible series. Told through a non-traditional format of transcripts, emails, instant messaging, artificial intelligence, and more, the first two books in the Illuminae Files trilogy were impeccably plotted and had me turning the pages as fast as I could. I’m glad to say that Obsidio does not disappoint as the series finale.

Obsidio picks up right where Gemina ends, with Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik not yet recovered from the events of book two. But of course, they don’t get to rest just yet, and Obsidio starts off at a fast pace. But along with the familiar characters from the previous books (at least, those that have made it this far…), we meet two new main characters: Asha Grant (Kady’s cousin, still alive on their invaded planet) and Rhys Lindstrom (Asha’s ex, currently working for the people trying to kill everyone). It’s a large cast of characters but Kaufman and Kristoff incorporate the new and the old seamlessly.

Fan favorite AIDAN is back too, and he (it?) has some tricks up their metaphorical sleeves. Let’s just say, it might not be smart to trust him just yet…

Once again, Kaufman and Kristoff have plotted a story that will keep you on your toes. Between the fast pace, intense plot, and creative format, this 600+ page book flew by. I wanted to savor the story but I just couldn’t help continuing on – I loved the new characters (both the main ones and the side characters) and wanted to know how all of the ends got tied up in this crazy, dangerous, action-packed sci-fi story. Thanks to evil geniuses, Amie and Jay, Obsidio keeps you guessing. The twists! The turns! The reunions! The betrayal!

Obsidio is a heartbreakingly satisfying end to the Illuminae Files trilogy. I cannot recommend this series enough, and I can’t wait to see what Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff do next.

About the book:

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.
