I’m being lazy, instead of writing a review for all the episodes that I missed, I just decided to write an overall summary and review of all 6 episodes of “The New Normal.” So far, the show is going great, a lot of drama, laughs, tearjerkers and heart-warmers.
Episode 1, “Pilot,” introduces Bryan, David, Goldie, Shania and Jane. Goldie finds that her life is going to hell, and after she finds her husband cheating on her, she’s has an epiphany and hightails it to California with her daughter, who I must admit has an old sou,l but it adds to the comedic value of the show. Goldie has the choice of going back to Ohio, but after a call with her grandmother, she realized that it’s time for her to create a new life with Shania. Luckily she decides to become a surrogate for a gay couple, and they become fond of her. Bryan and David think that Goldie is fantastic, and even if she doesn’t end up pregnant, (which she does anyway) they will still help with her dreams. Jane comes to California looking for Goldie, and after she finds out what she’s gotten herself into she decides to stay and talk some sense into her.
Episode 2, “Sofa’s Choice,” tells the story about how Bryan and David met. It’s probably one of the funniest episodes because Shania is dressed as Little Edie from “Grey Gardens.” Bryan really doesn’t like Shania at first because she says he wears lady clothes. He goes in his office to see that someone has written a little face on his expensive couch. He automatically thinks it’s Shania. The whole episode she’s walking around saying these crazy phrases from Grey Gardens, like she was talking in riddles. So when Bryan confronts her, he’s confused at first, but then realizes it’s Grey Gardens. Bryan and David met back in the late 80’s or the early 90’s at a club, and the rest was history. Goldie does end up pregnant, but doesn’t really want help from Bryan and David. Her ex comes back to get her, but he really didn’t want her; the grandmother planned the whole thing. Also, the grandmother is the one who wrote the little face on Bryan’s couch. In the end, everyone ends up watching Grey Gardens, it even had me interested in the documentary.
Episode 3, “Baby Clothes,” is where all the drama comes in, but we still have some good laughs. After the boys go shopping with Goldie for baby clothes and share a little kiss in the department store, a rude and BALD man ask them not to do that kind of “stuff” in front of his kid. Frankly, I was appalled, but these kinds of things happen every day. After the incident at the mall, Bryan starts thinking about how afraid he is to raise a kid in a household with two dads. David goes to the gym and is waiting in line, and this rude man is behind him, yelling at the first customer who is mentally challenged. David gets pissed off at him, and punches the guy in the face. The man who is mentally challenged says “I don’t need you to fight my battles for me, faggot.” I just felt really disturbed and weird and pissed all at the same time. At school, Shania gets attention from a boy with a dirty little mind. After Shania goes to school with a baby shirt that Bryan bought her, the boy quickly takes Shania to a make out session. After being caught by Jane, Shania is ashamed and embarrassed. They sit down with the boy and his mom to discuss what happened, and now she can talk to her son about anything, “well almost anything except his dad because she STILL doesn’t know who that is yet.’’ David and the guy he punched get thrown out of the gym, and he then finds out that the guy he punched is a homosexual. Goldie feels awfully sorry at the end because she heard what the guy was saying to Bryan and David, but she was too afraid to stand up. She decided next time that happens she will defend them because now they are family.

In Episode 4, “Obama Mama,” Shania’s school is having a mock election, and Brian and David ask her who she is voting for. She tells them that she votes the opposite of what her mother votes. So that meant Shania was voting for Obama, and that Goldie was voting for Romney. They were shocked and upset, knowing that she was voting for Romney. On another note, Jane confronts Brian and David about not having black friends after they call her racist. So they throw this elaborate party and Bryan even invites his African-American assistant in the hopes she would bring black friends. He is highly disappointed when she shows up with three white women. She asks Bryan, So the only reason you invited me is because you though I bring some sistas?”
Bryan hasn’t run out of tricks yet; he notices that there is a black waiter/actor who is manning the bar. He tricks the waiter into pretending that he is auditioning for a role as Bryan’s friend. Meanwhile, Goldie meets Rocky’s (Bryan’s assistant) brother, and they hit it off. Goldie hides the fact that she’s pregnant with a homosexual couple’s baby. When Jane sees the two hitting it off; she decides it’s time to put a stop to the whole thing. She makes a big scene at dinner about politics and ruins the night for everyone. She also tells everyone that Goldie is knocked up. Goldie is humiliated and embarrassed runs out crying. They find her in a local burger joint eating and crying. She thought if she moved to California that things would change, but things are pretty much the same. Now, her ex is suing her for custody.

In Episode 5, “Nanagasm,’’ Jane meets a stranger at a bar and decides to go to bed with him. She was shocked and afraid when she had an orgasm. She thought she was having a stroke. David’s mom comes to visit, but she and Bryan don’t like each other, so it puts a strain on the visit. David’s mom helps Jane find her sexual side again. So when she goes to sleep with the guy again, he just tells her that she’s needy and that he never should have slept with her. Bryan and David’s mom have a heart-to-heart talk… she thinks he is a selfish, spoiled brat. He thinks that she is too controlling. In the end, they get along, but it feels like this episode was missing something.
And last but not least, Episode 6, “Bryanzilla,” is when Shania’s school friend asks her to pretend marry him; she says yes. It becomes this big, old thing, but David and Jane are not such big fans. Bryan gets all worked up because he wants to marry David, but David doesn’t want to get married until everyone can marry whoever they want. So Bryan throws a big wedding for Shania, but Jane finds out and is mad as hell so she takes three girls from the elementary school to sabotage the wedding. It doesn’t go to plan, and Shania is heartbroken. After some pep talk from her mom, she decides she’ll be fine. The end of the episode was the best because David asks Bryan to marry him.
