Favorite Moments from AN EMBER IN THE ASHES Series

Welcome back to the re-read campaign for the EMBER Quartet leading up to the release of the highly anticipated Reaper At The Gates by Sabaa Tahir! This week we’re re-reading book two, A Torch Against the Night, and sharing some of our favorite moments from the series thus far. Check out our favorite moments below and let us know what your favorite moments are:

-The beginning of An Ember In The Ashes: this might seem like an easy choice but the way Sabaa introduces the world and the main characters (Laia! Elias! Helene! Darin!) is so captivating and well-done. The first chapters of AEITA create an engrossing foundation for the rest of the books.

-In An Ember In The Ashes when Elias helps Laia while she has an infection: this is the first real moment of connection between the two of them. Laia has to get over her distrust of Elias (because he is the Commandant’s son) and Elias’s good character gets a chance to shine. It’s a brief moment in the span of the book but shows that Elias is more than his bloodline.

-The Keenan reveal in A Torch Against the Night: I’m going to try to avoid spoilers but…. Be warned that this is a major turning point. My reaction when this reveal was made was something along the lines of “WHAT? HOW CAN THIS BE? SABAA IS AN EVIL GENIUS. POOR LAIA. WHAT HAPPENS NOW?!??!” When one of the seemingly trustworthy characters suddenly shows his true colors, the plot of A Torch Against the Night really begins to accelerate. I did not see this moment coming and that made it all the more surprising and enjoyable.

-When Mamie Rila protects Elias and Laia from Helene in A Torch Against the Night: Mamie Rila plays a huge part in saving Elias from Helene as he and Laia are on the run. Both Helene and Elias were basically raised by Mamie and she has to choose which one to protect and which one to lie to despite her love for both. It’s one of the most heroic moments of the series.

-When Elias accepts his new role at the end of A Torch Against the Night: Again, I’m trying to avoid spoilers but WHOA was this character evolution surprising. Elias’s deal with the Soul Catcher leaves him in a very unique place and I can’t wait to see how it plays a role in A Reaper At The Gates.

About the book:

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.
