TV Review: Gossip Girl 6×02 “High Infidelity”

Gossip Girl Episode 6×02 – “High Infidelity” – Aired 10/15/12

After a slightly rocky start to Season 6, Gossip Girl seems to have found its stride one episode later. In “High Infidelity,” everyone is back to doing what they usually do. Blair is out to impress a Women’s Wear Daily journalist by enlisting her minions to help Blair look like a woman-in-charge. But that all fails rather quickly with the WWD journalist ends up being Nelly Yuki, a former minion of Blair’s. Yale has been good to Nelly; she’s polished, mature and can clearly see through Blair’s schemes. That doesn’t deter Blair from her usual ways as she once again orders her minions to help her come out on top in Nelly’s WWD article.

Dan and Georgina are still hanging out. Georgina is determined to help him publish a sequel to his exposé, “Inside.” Dan lets Georgina take the reins on that, including forcing him to attend a party Serena is throwing with new boyfriend Steven (guest star Barry Watson). Leading up to the party, Serena and Nate discover that their other-halves are cheating on them with each other. The tension at the party is thick as Serena tries to avoid Steven, and Nate avoids Natasha (guest star Zoe Aggeliki). After a confrontation between the four, it becomes clear that Steven and Natasha aren’t having an affair; they’re father and daughter. Oh, and Natasha is only 17 (Good one there, Nate!). Serena is shocked to hear that Steven has a daughter, but eventually gets over it because she lied to him for a whole summer. Natasha isn’t too happy about her dad dating someone as young as Serena, and Serena tries to get her to warm up by convincing Steven to let her continue dating Nate. Obviously, that isn’t enough because Natasha still looks quite hell-bent on breaking up her dad and Serena up at the end of the episode.

Other happenings on the Upper East Side include Chuck’s continued effort to dig up all of his father’s secrets. Bart keeps thwarting his attempts and rubbing Chuck’s failures in his face. However, that isn’t stopping Chuck; in fact, it’s spurring him on. What can the secret be? We only got one small clue in this episode. Apparently, Bart slept with Amira (guest star Andrea Gabriel) a few years back, and somehow their weekend together is connected to that secret. Amira leaves before Chuck can get her to tell him the truth though.

I still think that Bart Bass is Gossip Girl. This mystery is taking up Chuck’s entire story arc, so it has to be something important and relevant to this series ending. Nothing else seems to be leading us to “the BIG Gossip Girl reveal” but this. I guess time will tell, but I’m glad to see Gossip Girl get back into its flow. This episode managed to engage me in a way that it hasn’t been able to in a while. While it’s still not how it used to be, I appreciate it for trying to tread some familiar ground.

Best scene of “High Infidelity” goes to… Nelly Yuki’s conversation with Dan at the party. When Nelly tells Dan about them always being the losers and never fitting into UES world, “They’ll never let us in. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can stop trying and start competing… We have the truth. That’s how the losers win.” Those are very wise words from Nelly. I’m happy someone finally told this to Dan, even though he doesn’t exactly seem to get it yet.

Rating: 8/10 ★★★★★★★★
