Godzilla: King of Monsters Arrives in First Trailer Out of SDCC ’18

The reception to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 remake of Godzilla was mixed. Some thought it was a well crafted re-framing of the classic beast, others found it to be a self serious bore with occasional thrills. In 2019, Michael Dougherty (Krampus, Trick R Treat) will be bringing us his sequel, which seems to be taking on a new cast and an entirely different visual aesthetic as it introduces King Geedorah and Mothra into the mix. The tone is not quite as dour, instead aiming for more of a campy, Independence Day feel. Still serious, but with latitude for some gloriously cheesy dialogue. I’m not sure if the mostly blue visual pallet is really working for me, and I wish there was a little more of Dougherty’s trademark dark humor, but this is an intriguing look at next year’s biggest monster mashes. Check it out.

Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.  When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
