Wrecked 3×01 Review: It’s Survival of the Fittest

Our favorite TBS castaways are back. After surviving a plane crash in season two and outsmarting pirates, stealing their cruise ship, and then escaping the sinking of that cruise ship, the hilarious cast of Wrecked is back for a third season that will blow your mind. Literally.

At the end of season two, the castaways found themselves on a new island where the beach was covered in landmines. After watching the recently rescued captain of the sunken cruise ship blow up into a million pieces, one of the last nine survivors, Danny (Brian Sacca), decides he’ll be the savior and try to clear a pathway safe of landmines.

Well, that doesn’t happen.

Steve (Rhys Darby) sees a man dressed in camouflage in the woods and, along with some of the survivors, they go after him. This is all while Danny is stuck on the landmine. Danny being the imaginative one tries to talk Florence (Jessica Lowe) and Owen (Zach Cregger) through defusing a bomb.

TBS

Because this is the most rag-tag group of people, the defusion doesn’t work. Also because it’s TBS and you can stretch the truth, the trio ties Danny’s shoe to the landmine, slide his foot out and then throw the thing where it detonates on their only way off the island: their row boat.

If that wasn’t out there enough, the rest of the survivors get chased by an angry gorilla as they search for safety. The moment Pack (Asif Ali) comes face-to-face with the beast, it is shot down by a British man who looks like the evil real-life version of Clayton from Disney’s Tarzan.

The Shipley Brothers have done a fabulous job with the sleeper hit over the last two summers by bringing out the weirdest scenarios and making them work. Every year when the season ends I question how they can continue the story and yet, somehow they do.

This 30-minute Lost parody is what you need this summer as the group faces their biggest challenge yet. They’re used to just surviving and being the predators but now they’re the prey. It’ll be interesting to see how the group gets out of this situation and to safety and what will be in store for them during the rest of the season.

For the sake of their shenanigans, I hope they just overtake the island and never return home.

Wrecked airs on Tuesdays at 19/9c on TBS.
