The Purge 1X04 Review: The Future Doesn’t Look Bright in “Release the Beast”

After three episodes that are jam-packed with action, “Release the Beast” falls flat. Not sure if it’s the show or just the gruesome concept, but it’s quite a snooze fest since no one exciting gets murdered. For a show that is about murdering people, you’d expect every episode to be filled to the brim with death. But alas, this does not happen.

After watching her employee, Allison, brutally murder Mark, Jane starts to lose it. She starts berating Allison for what she does until Allison mentions what it is she sees on Jane’s laptop. This is when Jane realizes she needs to save David from the fate she’s bestowed upon him.

When her call to the hit woman doesn’t go through, Jane takes to the streets with just a hammer in tow. Thinking things will get intense for Jane means setting high expectations for something that doesn’t deliver. Yes, a guy does jump her and tries to roofie her, but Jane is saved by a group of armed women in an RV.

It turns out, the group of women work year-round to prepare women for Purge night. They tell Jane their job is protect those who can’t protect themselves, like Jane. The episode barely touches the surface with this new rogue group, but the intrigue is there and we’ll surely learn more about them moving forward.

Having the opportunity to tell a Purge story through a group of fearless women is a statement. And it’s one I’m excited to see unfold in the coming episodes.

At the high-end party, Jenna confides in Lila after she watches a man get murdered in front of her and Rick. Through a series of flashbacks, it’s revealed that Lila came into the couple’s life during a slump in their marriage. They became a threesome and Lila was there to spice things up. However, it seems she gets too close to Jenna for Rick’s liking.

Jenna and Rick have a deal that neither of them could be left alone with Lila and it’s to remain a three-person thing. But while Rick is away, Jenna and Lila play and Rick comes back to catch them in the act.

Upstairs, Lila reveals to Jenna she wants to be in their life and she wants to help raise her and Rick’s baby. Rick finds Jenna and Lila talking once again and his jealousy starts to emerge. But as the night progresses, their small spat is silenced by the next Purging events. It’s in this moment that the maid warns Jenna to get out of the house.

As for Penelope, she is taken to a carnival where people are held in cages and are being auctioned off for slaughter. When she finally makes her way onto to the stage, she is sold to someone she knows for $2,000 and by the look on her face, it’s not going to be pretty.

The next episode marks the halfway point for the series. “Release the Beast” sets up a lot to happen next week and the expectation is for something big to go down Here’s hoping The Purge delivers.
