STAR Season 3 Premiere Review: “Secrets & Lies”

As the wise Kristin Cavallari once said on The Hills, “Drama, drama, drama!” The season three premiere of STAR proved that not all drama can easily be swept under the rug. Picking up months after Star abandoned Take 3 for a solo gig on the tour, STAR’s season three premiere, “Secrets & Lies,” focused on the aftermath of their falling out. In fact, many of our favorite characters were left reeling following the deaths, fights, and business deals that tore them apart. The group had to pick up the pieces, but as evidenced in “Secrets & Lies,” not every character could bury the hatchet.

Take 3’s separation, break-up, and then eventual reunion was a roller coaster of emotions that tore us up inside. These ladies are superstars with a drive to reach success while keeping their family together. Their ambition and talent were what captivated us in the first place, so when Alex and Simone announced their group’s official break-up, the reveal dug right into the emotions. How could you have STAR without Take 3?! Luckily, the break-up only presented itself as a hurdle for these characters to eventually get back together and on a path to reconciliation.

Alex suffered the biggest hurdle due to her PTSD. As weird as it sounds, the plot made the right decision by having Alex on that plane during the crash instead of shying away and having her “narrowly avoid” the accident. The incident opened her up for more character development and it created a mystery regarding the character of Bianca. Before the plane crash, Alex kept flip-flopping between wanting a solo career, dating her boyfriend, cheating on him, and sticking with Take 3. Since then she’s focused on her career, her boyfriend, and knowing exactly what she wants in life. Alex returning to her ambitious and dedicated roots feels true to the character.

In regards to Bianca, intuition seemed to be that she died in the crash. Hopefully, STAR explores more of what happened after the plane crash and how it affected Alex. She needs to work on her mental health and the effects of the traumatic incident, including whatever happened to Bianca.

Simone’s homesickness is a classic sign of making a rush and reckless decision. All she wanted to do was be with her family again, but everything was forced out of her hands. Out of the Take 3 members, Simone had always been the more emotional one and a hopeless romantic. So, when she was faced with her sister abandoning her, her husband being deported, and the group breaking up, it wasn’t surprising that she reacted negatively to fill the void. Whether she knew it or not, her actions were meant to hurt Star, Alex, Carlotta, and Angel.

As much as Angel and Simone were cute together, they rushed into their marriage. Being together in the Dominican Republic must’ve opened her eyes to the fact that the relationship just didn’t work–they’re young and have many years to figure stuff out. Not to mention that her cheating and hooking up with Nina Ferrera is going to cause a lot of trouble! Let’s see how juicy this drama gets now that they’re going to work together at the record label.

So, who do you think is the father of Star’s baby? At first, Noah or Jax seemed like good candidates, but the odds could be someone outside of the obvious guesses. Still, how did no one notice Star was pregnant? Star kept wearing baggy clothing in her performances, which completely goes against her character’s style. Even the music video and the performance at the party highlighted the obvious fact. However, STAR adding in Jude Demorest’s real-life pregnancy to the story made the transition more natural instead of covering it up creatively. It was a good move on their part to acknowledge the change in Star’s (and Jude’s) life.

Noah Brooks made one of the biggest changes in his time away by getting clean. It’s great to see the character back at ease and working on his demons. He’s trying to make a change for the future. The tour’s cancellation was completely out of his hands so hopefully he can stay on the clean and narrow. On the other hand, what was with the surprise gunfight at the press conference? Something had to have happened on tour to cause all that tension between Noah, Star, and Joyce Sheree.

Similar to Empire, the music business drama never ends, which we always love to have! On the one hand, it’s a shame that we lost Michael Michele as the music businesswoman Ayanna Floyd–she was so awesomely cutthroat and stoic. But, luckily we have Carlotta taking on the leadership role at the label to bring Take 3 and Noah Brooks to superstardom and her new business battle with Mateo. (Side-note: whoever hired William Levy and wrote his sexual tension-filled scenes deserves a raise. Bless you and your paycheck.)

Speaking of Carlotta, she should’ve let go of her anger toward Cassie. All she had to do was forgive her for accidentally murdering Jahil, but now the bitterness sparked a war. Plus, their fighting nearly killed their mother! What do you think Cassie and Maurice have planned? One of them doesn’t mind resorting to murder so someone could be dead soon. And with a rapist running around (poor Ruby!), there’s already a lot of danger hurting everyone.

The season three premiere of STAR came right out of the gate with fire, passion, and stellar flair. Much of the tension from the season two season finale carried over into the premiere, but the characters worked on their issues to get back into the mindset. Will Take 3 survive after their second album release? Things are still up in the air, but let’s cross our fingers these ladies survive the drama to stick together.
