This Is Us 3×06 Review: “Kamsahamnida” Opens Doors for the Pearsons

The Pearsons are all over the place in “Kamsahamnida.” The Big Three each have their own issues they’re dealing with in their lives, but they still find time to be there for each other.

For Kate, everyone rallies around her after learning that the IVF worked. While she’s elated with the news, she also has to take a step back because she’s working to help Toby work through his depression. Throughout the episode we see Kate lean more on her mom when it comes to decision making, mostly about the dog, because she’s doing what she can to give Toby his space.

Since we saw more of Toby’s depression arc last episode, it’s more of a quiet background topic in “Kamsahamnida.” It’s not until the end when Toby surprises Kate by getting dressed because he’s scared she will leave him that his presence is really felt. After she assures him she isn’t going to leave him, she does push him a little to go outside with her and he joins. After giving him so much space, that little push is a small step in the right direction for them.

For both Beth and Randall, it seems they’re going a mile a minute. Beth is working to get a new job after being fired from her former firm where she worked, Beth helps the girls sell Girl Scout cookies but she’s struggling. After not being on her A game when it comes to selling cookies, she loses it on the girls after Tess says Beth is not as good as the other moms.

Beth portrays what many women are going through these days, whether they have been recently fired from a job or haven’t had one for awhile and struggling to get into the workforce. Beth is someone who is always on it and she finally reveals to Randall that she’s not. After spending the day with the girls realizing how out of touch she is, she is finally able to be real with herself and decides to focus her energy on not finding another job just yet, but decides to help Randall with his campaign instead.

While Randall is trying to win over the Asian community in Philly, Kevin decides to lend a hand. While there, Kevin can’t shake the Vietnamese woman photographed wearing the same necklace Jack gave him as a child was. After mulling it over, he decides he is going to Vietnam to find her and learn more about her.

While most of the Pearsons have been relatively close this past season, we will finally see how the Big Three does when one of them is countries away instead of hours. We have only visited Vietnam in the past, now it’s time to see what happens when another Pearson visits in the present.
