“Sometimes” took us back to the beginning of Rebecca and Jack’s story together and to the start of many of their firsts. We saw the first time they went on a road trip, the first time they slept together, the first time he told her about Vietnam, and even the first time Jack called her “Bec.”
While most of the episode followed Rebecca and Jack’s first trip together, it also followed Kevin and Zoe’s first big trip together as they landed in Vietnam to learn more about the mysterious woman seen in a photo wearing Jack’s necklace.
Kevin and Zoe had a slow start to their trip. While eating, Kevin saw multiple replicas of his father’s necklace and started to second guess if there really was any semblance to it. However, a flashback provides us with the knowledge as to how it was handcrafted and went through multiple owners before Jack met the mysterious woman and got a hold of it. Just like Kevin, we still don’t know much about who this woman is.
As for Rebecca and Jack, their trip started off painfully slow. Rebecca tried her best to get a conversation going in the car, but it wasn’t until their first dinner together that they clicked and we began to see the Rebecca and Jack America fell in love with.
“Sometimes” also answered the question as to why Rebecca never fully pursued music. During her meeting with some LA producers, they told her she was only “Pittsburgh good.” That brought her to the conclusion that that was all she was ever going to be. Once reunited with Jack, she put on a brave face and told him it was time to head back home.
While Rebecca was trying to make a plan for her future, Jack was still stuck in the past. Later, Jack went to the parents of the soldier who died under his command while in Vietnam. He told them what happened and apologized for their son dying. In a moving moment, they reassured Jack that their son’s death was not his fault and that helped to ease some of his pain.
But not all of his pain was revealed. In the beginning of the episode, we see Jack plead to Nick’s commander to let him take his brother under his wing. While it was against protocol, in the end Jack was granted command of Nick for two weeks to try and straighten him out. But by the look of it, Nick wasn’t too happy, so there’s still more to the mystery that’s just waiting to be revealed.
