“The Scorch Trials” is the second book of The Maze Runner trilogy. After Gaby did a review on the first book, The Maze Runner, I wanted to read the sequel to see what it was all about. I did not expect in a million years that after escaping the maze there would be more.
At the end of The Maze Runner, we are all left with a cliff hanger. The Gladers have to pass some Trials in order to get a cure. At the beginning of the book, Thomas, Theresa and the Gladers finally leave the Maze and are being transported to some sort of hotel where they all are given food, a shower and bedrooms to sleep in. Theresa is separated from the boys and has her own room. Things get strange the next morning: Thomas wakes up after Theresa calls him in his mind telling him that there’s something wrong with this place. Thomas looks around and the Gladers are shouting at these people who are zombie-like humans who want to attack them. Theresa isn’t in her room, Thomas calls her and she doesn’t answer. Everything is so bizarre and while Thomas and the other Gladers try to find out what is going on….OH WAIT FOR IT…. WICKED has more things planned for them!
In “The Scorch Trials” the Gladers are told they possess a disease called the Flare which has technically wiped out most of the human population, they are doing some tests on them with the disease in order to develop a cure. The Gladers are on one of the early levels of the disease which in time makes people lose their rationality and act like animals, just like the zombie-like creatures who attacked them previously. They are offered a cure, and for them to get it they have to go across a land called The Scorch (modern day Mexico and Central America perhaps) in a 2 week period and need to get to the “Safe Haven”. The Gladers have no idea whats in store for them, the people they will encounter, the places and things they will see along the way.
This book was filled with unexpected twists and moments where you will go “WTF?!”. We don’t know what WICKED’s intentions are yet, if they are so “good” as they say they are. A fair warning: if you thought the Maze Runner’s cliff hanger was too much, get ready for the end of this one. I need “Death Cure” now!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, more character development this time, excellent description of the places and people had me wondering “Whoa if they ever make a movie of this I wonder how are they going do it in the big screen”. Mr James Dashner, I want to know everything already. Seriously. Too many secrets, too many variables, too many trials.
