Film Review: ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ is a thoroughly enjoyable crime drama

I loved The Lincoln Lawyer which is something I wasn’t expecting. I’ve never really seen Matthew McConaughey do a serious role. So I was expecting to him to sort of kill the role and take the entire movie down with him.

I was wrong. The Lincoln Lawyer is like a really good episode of Law & Order. Once you start it, you’re drawn in. This movie had a brilliant cast, story, and music; it’s a thoroughly enjoyable crime drama.

The movie is about a defense attorney, Mick Haller, who works out of his Lincoln Town Car. (Hence the name of the movie…) When he’s handed a case to defend a client (Ryan Phillippe) who has been accused of beating and attempting to rape a prostitute, it seems like an easy win. However, he soon realizes that some things don’t add up right with this case, and that realization takes a dangerous turn.

The story really draws you into it. It starts doing that by letting you get to know the characters. As things kept happening, you just couldn’t help but be on the edge of your seat. Someone asked me if there was a big twist. There isn’t really one; there is just many small twists that happen throughout the story and make you want to pull your hair out in frustration for the main character. But at the same time, the story doesn’t take itself so seriously. Comic relief goes on throughout it; lightening it up at the right moments.

The acting was really great and major kudos to Mr. McConaughey for carrying this movie. This is definitely one of his finest roles in his career. Same goes to Ryan Phillippe; he really stood out as the villain in this movie. These guys were backed up by other pretty awesome actors, such as, William H. Macy, Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, Bryan Cranston and John Leguizamo. (If anyone is a Boardwalk Empire fan, Shea Wingham is hilarious in this movie.)

Usually in crime dramas, I don’t pay attention to the music, but Lincoln Lawyer was an exception. From the opening credits to the end, we get some old school R&B and hip-hop to some bluesy, soul heavy music. It’s the right mix for this movie and made it unique amongst the other crime dramas.

I will definitely say that The Lincoln Lawyer is the movie to see this weekend. You won’t regret it. It’s interesting, well-acted and just plain enjoyable, alright, alright, alright?

The Lincoln Lawyer will release into theaters tomorrow, March 18th.
