TV Recap: ‘Saturday Night Live’ with Justin Bieber

On Saturday, Justin Bieber was the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. The show started off with a skit about the power outage that occurred at the Super Bowl. The commentators had to come up with things to talk about until the power came back on. I was hoping they would go the route of talking about how Beyoncé was getting blamed for the power outage, but they didn’t mention it.

Bieber took to the stage for his monologue, where he was looking for a valentine, while going up to different girls in the audience and passing out roses, telling them some inaccurate black history facts. In the end, his valentine ended up being surprise guest, Whoopi Goldberg, who was sitting in the front row of the audience.

The cast did their re-occurring sketch called “The Californians,” a soap opera about people, who live in California and have blonde hair and talk like stereotypical surfers do. Bieber participated in the sketch and had a pretty good accent. In fact, most of the sketches he acted in involved him having to speak in an accent.

In one of the sketches, Bieber played the president of a Miley Cyrus fan club, and he was a guest on her talk show. As the president of the fan club, Bieber told Miley that she was a better singer than Justin Bieber, and when she told him they were friends, he started to make fun of himself. He said that Bieber looks like a lesbian, he mentioned the picture of him smoking weed, and said that “Justin” was sorry and would never do it again. I’m not sure if he meant that he was sorry he did it in the first place, or if he was just apologizing for getting caught, since he has some really young fans.

Bieber managed to stay in character throughout the show, until his sketch with actor, Taran Killam. Bieber played a Michael, the boyfriend of Killam’s character’s sister, who was meeting the family for the first time.  When Bieber’s character greeted Killam’s character, he said “Lyce to meet you,” by accident, but Killam’s character would not let it go. He kept making jokes about it and literally got in Bieber’s face about it, for a very long time, causing Bieber to laugh, and almost break character.

Aside from acting, Bieber performed two of his songs acoustically. Bieber had sent out a statement before his SNL episode aired, saying that anything goes for his SNL performance. He’s been in the news recently for a picture of him smoking weed, his on-again off-again relationship with actress/singer Selena Gomez, and other various things. While the episode touched on the weed, I was expecting there to be a sketch about he and Selena’s relationship, but they didn’t go there.
