It’s party time on The Carrie Diaries’s episode 1×10 entitled “The Long and Winding Road Not Taken”. Carrie is set to celebrate her 17th birthday with her friends and love ones, but her plans are derailed when Interview magazine throws a book release party for an up-and-coming author Bret Easton Ellis. The party ends up being a lot tamer than the party in the Halloween episode and for the entirety of the party I was on the look-out for a special appearance of the Less than Zero author himself. Unfortunately for me, he seemed to be absent from the party, but I did get to hear some wonderful New Order playing in the background of the party. As always The Carrie Diaries gets an A for its terrific soundtrack.
Carrie tags Walt along to the party. Walt ends up running into Bennett, things are awkward for the pair because the last time they saw each other they ending up kissing each other and then Walt freaked out and called Bennett the f-word. Apparently Bennett understands what Walt is going through and he forgives him because he went through the same exact thing when he was growing up. The whole scene between Walt and Bennett clearly sets up the fact that Bennett will end up becoming Walt’s mentor (or future boyfriend) in upcoming episodes/seasons.
Sebastian makes it to the party to celebrate Carrie’s birthday. He ends up partying like Larissa Loughlin, consuming copious amounts of alcohol and Carrie ends up having to escort him home thereby botching her chance to sign a book deal with an established publisher. It seems that Kydd has a lot of problems under the surface. If The Carrie Diaries is following the Josh Schwartz television model, then I predict that there is going to a huge blowout fight involving Sebastian and Carrie where all his issues will come out and he may or may not end up in a car accident or falling off a building (RIP Bart Bass).
Maggie and Mouse both had bit parts in this episode, but to be fair this one was mostly a filler episode. Which is a shame because the previews seemed to have promised something completely different than what the episode actually delivered.
Dorrit made an appearance this episode in which she gets caught shoplifting and ends up making a friend. Usually, I jump for joy at any mention for Dorrit, but it’s starting to get to the point that I want more for her character. Her stereotypical rebellious teenager bit is becoming a bit redundant. Hopefully with this introduction of a new friend for Dorrit, she’ll be able to show a new side to her.
Rating: 5/10 just for New Order and the Easton Ellis references. To be honest with you I wish this whole episode was a road I (and the writers) had not taken.
