TV Show Review: Give ‘The Voice’ a chance!

The Voice has made a splash on my Facebook page. Many of my friends’ statuses Tuesday night were indicating that they were watching the new show. I was curious to what this show was. I only watch a limited amount of television, so I wasn’t aware of all the advertisements for this singing talent show.

The concept is pretty interesting. We have four popular and successful musicians from sort of different genres, choosing new singers to create their own singing group. However, when selecting who they want on their team, the judges are turned away from the contestant, so each can only be judged on his or her voice, not looks or any other physical factors.

The four musicians are Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green, and Blake Shelton. The host is surprisingly Carson Daly, which I haven’t seen since TRL. (I miss those days.) Daly is fairly adequate as a host, but nothing too special. He lacks the flair and likeability that Ryan Seacrest masters as the host of American Idol. Put that aside, the team leaders are a good group of today’s musicians. They have great chemistry, and it’s fun to see them fight over contestants. As for the contestants, only the real talented ones are invited to sing. We don’t have the go through the bad auditions for some comedy. But don’t get me wrong; watching the Levine and Aguilera argue is pretty entertaining.

In a way, it’s almost like a game show. Once a contestant starts singing, I try to predict which judge will press the button first. At times, it’s so predictable, and others are a pretty big surprise. So far, this has all been fun to watch. The beginning of this concept is great and just works for audiences who like talent shows but want something different.

How will the rest of the season go? I’m not sure. At the end, they gave an overview on what’s to happen throughout the rest of the season. I was a bit confused. I’m unsure if I’ll be sticking to this show for more than the next couple episodes. Yet, I definitely recommend you give it a try. It’s a fun show, full of likeable personalities. Finally, NBC seems to have a good one.

The Voice airs Tuesdays nights 10/9c on NBC.
