TV Show Review: MTV’s ‘Teen Wolf’ Series Premiere

Gaby’s thoughts: Last night, MTV premiered its new series, Teen Wolf right after the MTV Movie Awards. I’ve been hearing about this television remake of the 1985 film for a while, and I was oddly curious about it. I gave it a chance, and well, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either.

Teen Wolf’s biggest downfall is the acting. My God, do they only hire good looking people without any sort of actual acting talent? Tyler Posey is okay as the lead, Scott, but his acting wasn’t very consistent throughout the episode. The best actor on the show was probably Dylan O’Brien, who plays Scott’s friend Stiles. I think I went the whole episode without cringing every time he spoke. As for the rest of the cast? Just blah. But it’s pretty blah, and if the superficial entertains you, then have at it.

The plot is semi-interesting. It’s literally just enough to make me want to tune in for the next episode. But I honestly don’t have enough faith that this show will have me tuning in for an entire season. It’s ridden with terrible dialogue. When one of the asshole jocks asked Scott “where are you getting your juice?” in reference to steroids, I burst out laughing.

I completely believe that this show could be good, if more sincere effort was put into it. This is what stops me from saying that Teen Wolf is terrible; I can see the potential. MTV is being lazy and trying to give people what they think want. I don’t want a mindless supernatural show cast with pretty people. But I guess that’s what I deserve for tuning into a network where the best show on it is Jersey Shore.

Lucy’s thoughts: Tyler Posey a.k.a Teen Wolf a.k.a Scott a.k.a the little kid from ‘Maid in Manhattan’ with Jennifer Lopez… HELLO THERE! From the first time I saw the preview for the show, I was kind of excited to see what MTV will bring to this Teen Wolf adaptation, I was very aware this was not going to be anything compared to the 80’s version with Michael J. Fox, regardless, I wanted to see what it was all about.

Its an okay show, I like it and I’m more likely to tune in tonight to see the 2nd episode. Maybe because at the end I am a sucker for supernatural tv/movies/books? MAYBE. And also because I want to draw in comparisons between this wolf series and everything else out there that has the lycanthropy factor.

As Gaby said, the acting wasn’t at its best…but hey, the first time I saw Pretty Little Liars I was just shaking my head from the beginning until the end of the episode because the acting was so bad, and with time the girls as well as the story got better. So I’m giving Teen Wolf a chance to redeem itself.

Teen Wolf airs on MTV Mondays at 10pm EST
