TV Show Review: ‘The Nine Lives of Chloe King’ Series Premiere

ABC Family has been releasing a plethora of new TV shows. Sometimes it’s hard for me to keep track of all of them. Here’s another to add to the batch: The Nine Lives of Chloe King. I first heard about this show when a sneak peek of it was played in a movie theater. (You know how they have that special advertisement/trivia thing playing on the screen before the previews start.) Well, the sneak peek hardly held my interest, and I sort of forgot about it in time. Until I was reminded that it would premiere after the summer premiere of Pretty Little Liars. I decided to give it a try and I could write up a review on it.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King was better than I expected. But as you know, my expectations were pretty low. The show follows 16-year-old Chloe King as she discovers that she has superhuman powers and that it’s her destiny to save her kind. There’s a scene where they throw some of mythology at you and unfortunately, I was distracted during that part. Hence, I didn’t get to fully understand what “kind” Chloe exactly is. Anyway, she’s some sort of demigod, and there are people who want her dead. So she ends up getting killed, but get this: She has nine lives! I bet you couldn’t see that one coming! Lol

The show isn’t bad. In fact, I would say that it’s one of the better shows on ABC Family. Chloe is a very likable character. She’s sweet and a little dorky. She’s very relatable, if you count out the whole demigod thing. The rest of the characters are okay. Nothing too special about them yet; maybe as the series go on they’ll have a little more depth. Also, the love interest is pretty boring; I sensed hardly any chemistry between the two. I can’t tell if they’ll make a love triangle out of story. They probably will though to add some spark to the show.

The plot is pretty predictable, but it’s semi-enjoyable. I had some fun watching it. I can’t say if I will tune in to watch it next week. I want to just to see if the plot will remain predictable or if they’ll go a new direction with it. Plus, I really like Chloe; I consider her my favorite female character on the ABC Family network ever. I guess with this show, the bad and the good almost balance it out.

If you watched last night’s premiere, let me know what you thought! I’m curious to hear how others reacted to it.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC Family.
