Book review: “Bossypants” by Tina Fey

I wish the title for this post wasn’t “Book review” I wish it was “My love letter to Tina Fey and the uber-awesomeness that is Bossypants”.

From the moment I heard the book was out, I was like “I HAVE to get it”. I went to the Barnes and Noble that’s right across the street from my house and picked up a copy because I refused to read it on my Kindle for some awkward reason (the reason actually being that since the book had pictures I wanted to see them on actual paper, not a screen).
At any rate, if you ever come across this book, it will take you 5 seconds just by reading the back cover to start laughing. Here’s a picture to show you:
Squint your eyes and try to read! If by reading the back cover you did not laugh or find it comedic at all, there is something wrong with you, or perhaps you had a bad day, who knows. All I know is, executive man or stay-at-home wife, college girl or restaurant busboy, get Bossypants. Because you’re guaranteed a laugh.

Now, onto my review of the book foreal this time:
I can’t say “I loved it” because that’s in the past tense, I LOVE IT with every fiber of my being. Tina Fey has that ability to tell you her life in such a comedic way that at times I felt as if I was listening to her reading  the book to me (No I did not buy the Audiobook..yet). “Bossypants” is mainly about Tina Fey’s life, from her childhood, to when she was a teenager, when she had her first job at YMCA, when she became a writer for Saturday Night Live, going on a rather horrendous honeymoon with her husband, to the Sarah Palin frenzy, 30 Rock, and so on. Fey usually speaks on a self-deprecating tone, yet it is very humoristic and at some points in the book you would feel like you can relate to her according to the situation she was going through. As well as the footnotes, those were hilarious too. It’s Tina Fey’s sarcastic wit that makes this book so amazing and very easy (and fast) to read.

For girls like me, who hope that one day they get their dream job, whether its at SNL or somewhere else, I found this book to be inspirational. She started as a staff writer, writing sketches here and there and then becoming head writer, the first woman ever to have that position in Saturday Night Live and leading her into being part of the Weekend Update segment in the show. From SNL, she landed her development deal with NBC and became the executive producer of her show 30 Rock. Which girl in the world wouldn’t like to land her dream job? Not only does Tina tells us about her career, she gives us examples of what makes a good boss, what are the perceptions nowadays of women in politics, her anecdotes, about her family, etc.

I have to tell you guys, I did not want to neither put the book down nor finish it so fast. I really enjoyed it, as a Tina Fey fan, I encourage every Fey fan out there to read the book. If you’re not a Tina Fey fan however, I’m just hoping you laugh at the right times and give “Bossypants” a chance because it is comedy golden, and to this day and the amount of books I have read in my lifetime, no other book has made me laugh as much as this one and I have to thank you, Tina Fey, for sharing your story with us and looking at the funny side of things at all times no matter what is the situation.

All I have to say is, can I go re-read it now!?!?!

And Tina Fey, if you ever come across this post, I would love for you to sign my book :D
