TV Review: Pretty Little Liars 4×06 “Under the Gun”

KEEGAN ALLEN, TROIAN BELLISARIO

“SPOILER ALERT*

A lot went down in this week’s episode, so if you missed anything, here’s the scoop:

The detective questions Hanna’s possession of the gun, and informs that she could suffer jail time. Ashley pays her daughter’s bail, but Hanna faces her father. The family might be accused of the murder of Wilden.

Emily comes face-to-face with an enemy, Shawna, from swim and a friend of Jenna’s, who informs Emily that she switched schools for a better swim team and a better chance at receiving a scholarship.

Spencer and Aria meet Emily at work. They discuss the circumstances of Shawna, but Emily is so fed up with everything. Aria gives Emily a hand, assisting the new guy at work. The worker is actually a friend of Aria’s brother, as she also offers him help with his English homework.

Hanna’s father accuses Ashley of stealing the gun. Ashley denies everything and denies killing anyone. Hanna’s father is aggravated with Ashley as the entire family could suffer if it is detected that it was his gun that killed someone.

Mona appears at the coffee shop, and admitted that Spencer has been keeping confidential information from the girls, as Toby told her to keep quiet.

Ashley admits that she took the gun for protection, because she was scared for her life, but she did not shoot anyone. Caleb comes over but Hanna’s parents kick him out, saying that he cannot help.

Spencer and Toby discuss telling the girls the truth. But, Toby says that if they tell her friends what happened, he will never find out the mystery behind his own mother. He claims that “A” knows everything about everyone. Toby eventually apologies for the situation that she was put in.

Aria’s brother catches Aria helping his friend with his English homework. But at the end of the night, the guy kisses her good night, but Aria steps back and says that she’s not interested in him in that way.

Emily tells Hanna that she needs to submit the video of Wilden’s death to the police. She claims that although the first half of the video makes Ashley look bad, it will prove that Jenna and Shawna are connected to Wilden, changing the course of events. The next day, she sneaks the video to the police station.

The brother’s friend tells all of his friends, in the gym locker room, that he hooked up with Aria. Aria finds out from her brother, and storms into the locker room and confronts the kid. The kid then tells her that everyone knows that she and Mr. Fitz were more than Scrabble buddies, and then he questions how many points he would receive for the word “slut” (real classy). For the rest of the day, Aria receives random texts from people basically calling her a slut. Ezra sees Aria sitting on the stair case upset and approaches her, but Aria tells him that he can’t be the one cheering her up because it isn’t a rumor, there’s truth to it.

Emily approaches Mona to inform her of the information behind Toby. Mona says that she can’t make a wrong move by “A” because then everyone suffers.

Spencer and Toby make a road trip to a specific address, expecting a woman. However, when they arrive at the house, there is only a fairly-old man, who claims that he’s the only one at the house. Nevertheless, once Toby and Spencer leave the house, the man makes a phone call. On the way back home, they take a stop to get a snack, but come across a hair salon, where Spencer finds the woman she was looking for.

The woman denies knowing the “friend” of Spencer’s. Spencer claims that perhaps she called, and said her name was Vivian. However, the woman says that she is not the woman she is looking for. Spencer refuses to go home empty-handed, but Toby says that she needs to let it go.

Spencer walks down the street, and sees a ceremony going on, where everyone congregated around an angel statue. Spencer sees that Shawna was at the ceremony, and then when leaving, entered into Jenna’s car. Toby and Spencer jump into Spencer’s car, and a bird hits the front-car window. The couple exit the car and see that the bird was shot (perhaps from that same gun from before).

At the Open Mic Night at the coffee shop, the detective appears and asks Emily to join her at the police station. The detective shows Emily video footage of the night at the graveyard, and then shows her a CD with a note, a note with identical hand-writing to the Mother’s Day card that was left of Emily’s mother’s desk.

Back at the coffee shop, as Shawna plays the violin, “A” is outside smashing, with a bat, the car of Aria’s brother’s friend.

Ashley is arrested; it was traced that it was her fingerprints on the gun and the bullet that killed Wilden.

I loved that this episode had a focus; they discussed a lot about the gun, and a lot about Shawna. Everything is starting to come to full circle. Ithink that from the snippet of “A” hitting the car, perhaps “A” is starting to side with the girls, or it could be yet another accusation that it was one of the girls who committed the crime. I loved that Aria put her foot down, and definitely showed the viewers that she is a character with self respect, and would never let a guy treat her anything less. I loved that she also pushed aside Ezra; as much as we love Ezra, it’s time for him to go. It was great knowing him, but it is definitely time that Aria moves on. I also see a relationship growing relationship in Hanna’s family. Although, her parents are divorced, and now Ashley was taken to jail, it forces the family to bond. Yet again, a great episode. Certainly, less confusing than usual. And I’m very excited for next weeks episode!
