For the whole of this episode, I was literally wondering why nobody could see how twisted Big Jim really is. I understand that the directors wanted the show to have a spectacular finale but it just showed up the stupidity of the town and Deputy Linda.
Anyways, let’s start from the beginning. In the last episode, we left our Pink Stars group gazing at the cocoon inside the mini dome. And that’s exactly the foot this episode starts off on. The cocoon hatches into a monarch butterfly and Linda suddenly decides to take charge of the situation and declares the mini dome as police property and fills in Big Jim on the find via her radio. This is Linda’s first stupid move.
Throughout the episode, every scene she is in, was immensely frustrating to watch. She hinders the work of the Pink Stars group and helps Big Jim in reaching closer to his goal of domination to the point where I’m starting to believe that she’s his second in command or something.
Anyways, there are still some scenes that had me glued to the TV screen. There’s the awesome use of the “Butterfly Effect” where the newly-hatched butterfly’s desperate attempts to escape the mini dome lands the whole town in complete darkness. And also the fact that not only did Julia prove to be a freaking badass by breaking Barbie out of jail but she also turned out to be the “monarch” (the dome’s chosen one or something like that) when once the group managed to free the butterfly and escape the consequences of doing so, it kept flying around her. But what wasn’t surprising, was Junior’s betrayal towards the Pink Stars group. It’s not that I thought he would choose his father over the group because he’s loyal to him or anything but because I’ve learnt to expect the unexpected with him. Still, spontaneity doesn’t help him when he gets his ass kicked by Barbie when he holds the group at gunpoint and demands that they give up the egg.
With all this chaos going on, you’d think that somewhere in between they’d relinquish a whole lot more information on the dome than just figuring out how to communicate with it. The only thing it tells the Pink Stars group (when Norrie rubs the egg and an illusion of her dead mother appears) is that they’ve found a way to successfully speak to them and that the dome is there for their protection but doesn’t reveal from what.
Then we’re back to the zombie-like townspeople and ridiculous Linda, who mindlessly follows behind Big Jim like sheep when he reveals that they need to return to justice as it was in the olden days. So, he manipulates the townspeople into executing Barbie – who Junior managed to recapture – by hanging.

As Barbie prepares to be hung, the coolest thing happens. Julia, being burdened with the task of hiding the mini dome’s egg, decides that casting it into the middle of the sea is best and when she does, the spot where she dropped it starts glowing pink. Soon enough, series of pink lights rise around the dome and a blinding light takes over the space where the darkness was.
Feeling as if his time for ruling is going to run out, Big Jim yells at Junior to pull the lever that will send Barbie to his grave.
And then the curtains close on this season and we are left wondering if Junior did indeed pull the lever.
CBS has actually renewed Under the Dome for a second season that begins Summer 2014 and with a season finale like this, I am less than excited for it.
