TV Recap: Breaking Bad – 5×14 “Ozymandias”

Like Rome, the Hapsburgs, and Paula Deen before him, Walter White’s empire has started to crumble down in this week’s episode of Breaking Bad “Ozymandias”

After a flashback to Walt and Jesse’s first, viewers are taken back to where the last episode ended. The smoke has cleared for the shootout and Jack and crew are victorious. Agent Gomez lies dead while Hank is wounded from a gunshot wound to the thigh. Jack steps up to finish Hank off but before he does so Walt cries out to stop him. He discloses that Hank is his brother-in-law, a fact that does not sit well with Jack. Walt continues to plead for Hank’s life, he reveals that he has $80 million and will give it to Jack if he lets Hank go. Hank does not make the negotiations any easy on Walt and even curses Jack out. Hank knows the entire time that Jack has already made up his mind on killing him and no amount of bargaining will change it. Eleven minutes into the episode and Hank is shot in the head by Jack. The bumbling Sherlock to Walt’s Moriarty is dead.

Hello darkness, my old friend

Walt all but passes out with grief. Jack figures out that the $80 million Walter mentioned earlier is buried nearby. He has his crew dig up the money and take five barrels, they leave the final barrel filled with $11 million for Walt as a “kind gesture”. They also bury Gomez and Hank in the hole that previously held the money. Jack wants to make sure that there are no hard feelings between he and Walt. Walt doesn’t shake his hand but reminds him that Jack still has to kill Jesse as per their agreement. He points out that Jesse has been hiding under the car the entire time. Jack’s crew drag him out kicking and screaming, and just as Jack is about to unload a bullet into Jesse’s brain Todd stops him. Todd comes up with the idea to interrogate Jesse. He wants to find out everything that Jesse has told Hank to make sure that they are protected. Walt agrees to the idea but before they drag Jesse away Walt finally confesses about Jane. He coldly tells Jesse what happened that night and Jesse doesn’t respond in any way but looks entirely broken as Jack’s crew lead him away.

Left alone, Walt begins the long drive back home. One the drive home his car stalls due to a bullet penetrating the gas tank. Walt take the barrel out of the car and starts rolling it across the reservation. He comes across a man living on the reservation and buys his truck with a wad of cash from the barrel.

While Walt is finding his way home, Marie makes a stop at the car wash to inform Skyler that Hank has Walter in custody and it’s time to tell Walt Jr. the truth. Skyler breaks down and pleads with Marie to keep it all a secret from Walt Jr. Marie- who for the entirety of the series is seen to run from things and backs down when her older sister pulls rank- finally stands up for herself and asserts herself with Skyler. The pair of them tell Walt Jr. together who, reasonably, nearly has a panic attack and leaves the room. Marie suggests that Skyler take the kids and go home to wait for the news from Hank.

Jesse, who has been beaten to a bloody pulp, is being held in a make-shift prison. Todd arrives and forces him out and leads him to Todd’s lab. At this point Jesse is a whimpering, sniveling mess and begs to be let go. Todd ties Jesse up with a crude form of leash and orders that Jesse help him cook. Near the lab, Jesse spies a picture of Andrea and Brock. It’s a subtle warning that if Jesse doesn’t do whatever Todd says then Andrea and Brock are in danger.

Pulling up to the house, Skyler and Co. spy the truck Walt purchased in the driveway. Inside the house, Walter is hurriedly packing up everyone’s clothes into various suitcases. Walt doesn’t even flinch when he sees his son and wife. Even when Walt Jr. tries to talk to him about his various criminal activities, Walter blows him off and urges them all to start packing. Skyler stares shell-shocked at him and questions what happened to Hank. After an attempt of deflecting, Skyler figures out that Hank is dead thanks to Walt. Walt blows up with rage and insinuates that he tried to help Hank. Hearing that his uncle is dead Walt Jr. starts up again with another round of questions. As Walt is trying to derail his son Skyler grabs a knife and threatens Walt to leave the house. She slashes him with the knife and the pair begin to tussle for control. Walt Jr. steps in and breaks them up and calls the police. Walt makes a quick grab for Holly and leaves the house with her which enrages Skyler who causes after them screaming and crying.

Walt makes a pit stop to change Holly but the entire time Holly keeps crying for her mother. The police arrive at the house and set-up an Amber Alert for Holly. Marie is there too because she’s worried about Hank. Walt calls while the police are there and they set up a trace on the phone while Skyler is talking to him. Walter figures out that the police are listening so he starts berating Skyler and makes it seem she was an unwilling participant from the very beginning. He also admits that Hank will never be seen again which makes Marie break down. Skyler wants him to come home, but Walt says that he has more work that needs to be done. Walt is nearly crying while on the phone but does his best to not let it show. After hanging up he breaks the phone and drops Holly off at a fire station with a note pinned to her clothes with her name and address. At the end of the episode Walt is seen at the drop-off point where Jesse was supposed to be picked up a few episodes ago. Walt is going to set his old identity aside and gain a brand new one

Rating: 10/10 . There was so many things that I didn’t cover this time because I didn’t have the heart to do so. Had I the time I would’ve written 5 paragraphs on Marie’s color wardrobe change and the dichotomy between Skyler’s white suit and her black ensemble
