‘Orange is the New Black’ – Season 1 Review

At first, I was a little skeptical about watching this show because it seemed bit odd and strange, but I heard from many friends how fantastic it was, so I gave in. By the first episode, I was hooked. Overall, the show is about a woman, Piper, who is forced to go to jail because her ex-girlfriend sold her out on a drug deal 10 years ago. But, Piper goes to jail happily engaged to her fiancé, Larry. Piper wanted to go into prison with a positive light and no problems, but of course she encountered the unexpected, as the ex-girlfriend, Alex is at the same prison at the time as well.

But the show is way more than just Piper’s prison experience. It’s about the juicy relationship between an inmate and a prison guard, and how women unite forces in order to get through the rough days, and relationships between inmates and the ones at home. The ladies in prison are a tough crowd, but they make every moment worth watching. No character is similar to another one. “Every sentence is a story,” as they make as their headline. There are drug deals gone wrong, murders, robberies and thefts and so much more. The show is beyond a prison full of females.

When it comes to picking shows on Netflix, I really have to love what I’m watching. If I don’t like a show by the first episode, I stop watching the show and look for another one. Unfortunately, this show only had about 14 or so episodes in the first season, which only took me like a week and a half to watch. Thankfully, season 2 is supposed to be revealed in early 2014, and I am stoked beyond belief.

I was actually surprised I enjoyed the show as much as I did. I’m really into comedies like How I Met Your Mother, and although there were some comedic aspects throughout the season, the suspense of the show brought it to the next level. I just wanted to know more. There were laughs, tears and definitely times of cringing. I honestly thought I was in the prison alongside these women.

Of course people change in prison; it’s a life changing experience. These women were not necessarily certifiably insane people, they are perfectly normal people who made a mistake and now have to suffer the consequences for it. Now, that might not be the case in all prisons, but the series is based off of a true story told by the main character, Piper. I feel like the show really makes the viewers step back, and appreciate life for what it truly is, and how the people who surround you have such a significant impact on your life. I’ve learned to expect the unexpected, and roll with the punches. Life only happens once, so you might as well get as much out of it as you can. Season 2 comes out in early 2014; expect deaths, plot twists, and one hell of an awesome show.
