Read of the Week: Deeper by Robin York

Deeper (Caroline & West, #1)In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

I am a firm believer that nothing, well, almost nothing, good can come from the new adult genre. I’ve read a few myself, hated them all, have listened to conversations held in coffee shops and bookstores about the pointlessness of their story lines and the cheap grunge.

It’s never been done well, for me. Something was different about Deeper, though. The summary actually sounded pretty interesting. And it was, and I hated just how interesting it was.

So I wanted it.

My main problem with new adult books, being completely honest, is the amount of sex. Yes, sometimes it fits into the story line, sometimes it is the story line. But, but, it seems that all new adult authors are weirdly sex-crazed because in almost four hundred pages I can say that more than two hundred had to be filled with it. There is a time to stop and Robin York did not know when that time was. Sure, we had a story going, and it was plenty great, but I wish I could have gotten a little more than just a shitload of sex. I feel like a lot of important factors were overlooked only because Robin wanted to make room for lots of action time. I don’t think Deeper has a single chapter that doesn’t involve a sex scene.

While it’s fun to read NA because most YA readers grow up at some point and would rather read about college adventures than high school shenanigans, I’d for once like to focus on the story and not how much sex a nineteen year-old girl is getting. The new adult genre in general has a lot to work on but I could sit here and rant for ages without really ever getting there so I’ll just skip out on that.

West. West, West, West. This boy is bad. That’s the only way I can think to describe him. Drug dealing, possible man-whoring, other less-than reputable aspects that can possibly land you some jail time or a lifetime of heartbreak; that’s West Leavitt for you. He’s horrifically beautiful and really fun to read about, but there’s still so much about him I feel that readers didn’t get enough time to understand. Caroline is also a fun MC and getting to read about her unfortunate “hate porn” crime was extremely eyeopening. For once, a NA novel focuses on important matters in modern day society and that definitely wins Robin York a few redemption points. Okay, a lot of them.

As much as I’ve bitched about all the sex and lack of other-than action, Deeper really was a great book and I know that I’ll probably be one of the first in line to read it’s sequel because I, just like you, have my own fictional binges.
