Okay, so last week I said that I agreed with Octavia that Bellamy is just a selfish douche.
This week, I am totally conflicted. The 100 writers made such a good move in dedicating this episode to show us the background on both Bellamy and Octavia. As the group searches for Octavia through the forest, the flashbacks of her and Bellamy’s childhood are inserted simultaneously. It didn’t feel forced or out of place; the transitions were great and helped you follow both stories without getting lost.
So as we see, Bellamy had to be looking after Octavia literally since the day she was born. Not only that, but he had to deal with the captain of the guard team touching up on his mother right before his eyes. Gross.
Not judging her though because she did it for her kids. All that Bellamy ever wanted was to join the guard team. She knew the only way to give him a better future was to sacrifice herself.
Still, Bellamy constantly had to behave like an adult; he was clearly the only man in the family. The bond that he and Octavia have is strong, but there is also a lot of underlying issues that have never been spoken about.

In a certain way it was Bellamy’s fault that Octavia got locked up and that their mother was floated. Bellamy didn’t just lose his mother; he also lost his lifelong dream of being a guard when he and Octavia got caught at the moon rise party. All he wanted was to give his sister a moment of fun and freedom. A moment to feel normal. It seems to be that this is a circle of life for Bellamy; he’s full of good intentions but his actions never seem to play out the way he plans. Instead, usually others get hurt.
Three more people died this episode. Add it to the death toll. By episode 6, there’s one thing we have understood about The 100: they are not afraid to kill people off!
With all this time being the only ones on earth, the grounders have devised serious killing weapons and not to mention have impeccable aim. Roma got killed by one of the grounders as they used the same move they did on Jasper.

However, not all the grounders are evil. There’s one that’s taken a particular interest in Octavia. He found her at the bottom of the ravine, patched up her wounded leg and then carried her after he saved her from being killed by other grounders. He is kind; yet he does tie her up in chains in some sort of cave. I think this was one of the most interesting aspects of the episode. Why is this grounder so different?
Another good point is also why the rest of the grounders suddenly fled from killing the Octavia search group. As a loud siren sound blasted through the forest, all the grounders ran off immediately. Finn assumed it was acid fog on the way since the same sound was given the last time it occurred.
Yet, that wasn’t it. So, what other dangers are in the forest that even the grounders fear?

There’s so much to learn about Earth. I’m sure that the next episodes will be revealing much more. As for this episode’s reveal, Raven isn’t a fool. She immediately connects the dots between Finn and Clarke. Enter teenage drama.
Clarke is honest, and though it’s no excuse, she says they thought they would never see anyone from the ark again. Raven makes a good point in saying he could’ve waited at least more than 10 days before he decided to move on from his lifelong love. Men will be men, Raven, why are you surprised?
Very important information is revealed when we find out it was the commander of the guard team that told Bellamy about shooting Chancellor Jaha. He knew Bellamy would do anything for Octavia. Chancellor Jaha has no idea, but so many on the inside are plotting to kill him. Who was behind this inside job? Was it just the guard team or was the commander sent by someone else in the council? Kane, perhaps?
Pretty much the only good news is that they’ve found Octavia right after she knocks the nice grounder out with a rock. Bellamy is keen on killing him before they leave. Just as Finn is inspecting the grounder’s fog horn, he awakens and stabs him in the chest. Bellamy would be dead too if it wasn’t for Jasper who bashes the grounder in the head just before he shoved a spear into his throat. They’re able to escape to the camp with a severely wounded Finn.
But, the wounds that Octavia and Bellamy cause each other with their words and accusations are probably much deeper. Everything they’ve been holding in for years just comes to the surface. Though they love each other, the resentment is just clouding every good intention they may have. These two need some serious sibling therapy.
The hurt in Bellamy’s eyes is apparent. He loves his sister, but she wasn’t the only one who was denied a free life just for her birth.
This show is not afraid to show the issues that young people deal with as a consequence from their childhood. Their lives on the ark have marked their behavior and decision making skills. We may not live in an ark full of rules but somehow The 100 is able to make the issues these kids have relatable.
The acting just keeps getting better and better as each episode passes by. I truly hope that The CW renews it for a second season. If by episode 6 we have been able to see so many diverse ethical and emotional topics covered, then imagine what more they have in store for us.
This show has depth. One that I haven’t seen in young adult shows in quite a long time.
Now for next week, we just have to pray that Raven can communicate with Dr. Griffin on the ark so that Clarke can save Finn.
