Upcoming Artist: Caught A Ghost

Caught A Ghost is an indie electro soul band by Jesse Nolan from Los Angeles. According to their own Facebook page the band features band members that knew each other since the kindergarten. They also describe themselves as:

“a modern take on blue eyed soul, the tracks feature elements of classic motown and stax volt compositions with influences from dubstep, 90s rap, and contemporary electronica”.

And while all that is true, some elements of that description are more prominent than others, and for such a complicated description Caught A Ghost’s sound is very natural, uncomplicated, truly instrumental and pure. The electronica part of the previously mentioned description is one of those not so prominent elements in their sound, and in a very good way because yes, modern elements in their music are there, but they do present a retro feel that makes them sound refreshing in these modern times overwhelmed with too many synthetic and electronic sounds.

Caught a Ghost has been around for almost three years and they have previously released an EP but they finally released their debut LP, Human Nature, last month, on April 2014. They easily did deserve a spot in our Top 5 of the best musical releases of April but I missed it so, because the universe needs to be in balance, I’m introducing the band to you fellow reader now. I also considered doing a late review for their album but the thing is: most people really only read album reviews for artists they already know, and you might not have heard of Caught A Ghost before but they really should be listened by you.

Caught A Ghost is a fresh breathe of air in today’s music, and as trite as this premise sounds, it is true more than ever because their music is so powerful and classy that anyone of any age could easily enjoy. Just look at the old lady singing out the lyrics on their music video for Sleeping At Night (above), one of my favorite songs since I first heard Caught A Ghost, and it still holds up nicely as my favorite in the entire debut album more than a year later. They’re truly as good as mature pop gets these days, without being too commercial, sometimes depressing nor mechanic, just good ‘ol music for your ears that is so nicely crafted you will appreciate every instrumental or lyrical detail even more with every listen but what is specially remarkable is that it never sounds over produced with electronic arrangements in a studio, like most of today’s music. New fans of Caught A Ghost could also enjoy Fitz and The Tantrums and Max Frost.
