TV Review: The 100 1×13 “We Are Grounders” Part 2 – Season Finale

We Are Grounders – Part II

There are no words to describe the epic, gut-wrenching finale that The 100 provided for us. I am close to going into shock, and I didn’t know if my heart could bare so many things at once. I can’t even completely gather my thoughts for what possibly could happen next season.

For now, let’s begin with what happened with the second part of this finale.

Raven is severely hurt after being shot by Murphy. They have no time to operate on her since the grounders are on their tail, and Clarke orders that they must mobilize out of the camp. As it’s decided that Raven will be carried the whole way, Bellamy is meeting some resistance as he believes it won’t be wise to be on the move. But he realized that Clarke is truly in charge and all The 100 listen to her ultimately. Clarke is a wise leader, and she knows that though they obey Clarke, Bellamy inspires them.

As they’re exiting the camp, the grounders’ scouts have already arrived and hit one of The 100 forcing everyone to run back into camp. Exactly what the grounders wanted. They have no option but to stay and fight. The grounders are quite clever as they don’t attack but run around on the outsides of the camp’s gate as they instilling fear into The 100 making them waste their ammunition. How do they know that they don’t have more gunpowder? That’s because the leader of the grounders have captured Murphy and are torturing him because he didn’t warn them about the mines. Count that as the one thing that Murphy has done right.

The grounders are attacking viciously. Clarke is trying to carry out their new plan, to use the drop ship’s jet fuel and grenades to create a ring of fire and injure the grounders, but it’s quite hard to do with Raven’s shot wound getting worse. The bullet has made its way to her spine and she can’t even feel her legs. Finn decides to escape to Lincoln’s cave to find Raven more medicine. Raven is extremely valuable with all her mechanic skills, without her certainly The 100 would die. Not only does Finn make it to Lincoln’s cave but Lincoln is also joining the fight—on The 100’s side of course.

Finn has a terribly bad yet genius idea to delay the grounders from overcoming the gate. Finn and Lincoln call on the reapers, yes the flesh eating tribe, also known as the grounders’ enemies. It serves as a nice distraction and buys them about 30 seconds of time, but however it’s not enough and lives are being lost right and left.

Bellamy almost got axed by the grounders’ leader until Octavia stepped in and saved him all samurai style. It was great! Octavia’s strength has grown so much over this season and while I started out not trusting her and believing she was superficial, she has shown all her layers and actually has one of the best hearts on the show. The sibling love that Octavia and Bellamy share is DEEP! As she saved Bellamy, she was also hit with an arrow. Thankfully, Lincoln, like always, appeared just in time and brother and sister must separate in order to save Octavia’s life. It was interesting to see Bellamy’s growth as a brother in this moment as he realizes that he isn’t the only person who can protect and love Octavia.

He had to let her go for her well-being and their goodbye actually made me tear up. Don’t judge me! But really, Bellamy may be a lot of things, but no one can deny that he’s an exceptional brother to Octavia, despite the times his good intentions have gone wrong.

To switch it up to what’s going on in space, the ark is ready to be launched off to Earth. The only problem is the uncertainty of which stations will make it alive to the ground, there will be collateral damage but it was a risk they had to take. Another malfunction occurs when they try to launch off and the stations don’t budge. Someone has to stay back and launch the stations manually. Kane volunteers and the looks exchanged between him and Abby could be an indicator of a possible romantic connection in season 2. It’s something I’m honestly hoping for now that Kane has redeemed himself completely from his douchey attitude in the beginning of season 1.

The stations begin to launch off, all 12 without any exploding off. But it was not Kane who launched them manually, as Jaha beat him to the controller room before Kane could even get off his station. Jaha made the ultimate sacrifice as he now is completely alone on what remains of the Ark with a bottle of scotch and only 2 weeks of air supply. I don’t know if he will be back in Season 2. Unless the writers find an incredible way to get him to come down to Earth, it seems we may be bidding Jaha goodbye in the beginning of season 2. The 100 writers always seems to surprise us so I wouldn’t leave it past them to find a way to bring Jaha down. I also don’t leave it past them to kill him off. It is something I love about this show– I never know what will really happen.

When the battle gets to its end, we see that Clarke must go inside the drop ship and close its doors even though Bellamy and Finn are both outside fighting off grounders. We saw her struggle immensely about the choice she had to make. Her heart was torn for both Bellamy and Clarke. Although she obviously still has feelings for Finn, there is a deep affection that has grown for Bellamy as well. We do have to remember that Bellamy showed Clarke a vulnerable side to him that no one has seen. But she made her choice based on what was necessary for the rest of The 100, even it killed her inside. Tanya manages to fall into the drop ship before the door closes not stopping to think how outnumbered she would be. She’s lucky that Clarke tries her best to be a noble leader because everyone else was ready to cut her to shreds not remembering the fact that she was a girl or a human being for that matter.

When the rocket fuel ignites the ring circle around the drop ship, all the grounders around it are incinerated. Once the fire dies down all that is left is ashes and skeleton bodies. Suddenly, red smoke bombs are thrown into the camp knocking The 100 and Anya to the ground. It’s the mountain men. They have scary gas masks as a disguise and these green laser beams indicating they’re much more technologically advanced than the grounders.

Simultaneously, we’re relieved to know that the ark has landed on Earth and at least the stations that Abby and Kane are on made it completely alive. But off in the distance, they see a cloud of smoke burning. Could it be other stations that weren’t so lucky? Could it be The 100’s drop ship and campgrounds that were just incinerated? Abby and Kane will be finding out and their integration into Earth will surely be something interesting to watch on Season 2.

The scene switches to Clarke awakening in a completely white sterilized room. She rips off the IV she’s connected to, and the viewers are shown that there is a camera inside the room recording and monitoring her. She looks outside through the small round window, and her eyes lock with Monty’s! MONTY IS ALIVE!

All along we thought he was taken captive by the grounders, heck even by the reapers. But he was captured by the mountain men instead. The viewers are shown the hallway outside their rooms and we get to see a sign that says “Mt. Weather– Quarantine.” WHAT IS GOING ON?

It seems to be that the mountain men were humans that survived that belonged to the government and were able to make it to Mt. Weather which was designated as a safe zone. We can’t be sure if these people are evil or just curious about The 100. We can be sure that they have resources and power, though. But, the grounders were afraid of the mountain men and that says something too.

Many questions were left unanswered, which has completely left us hooked for the following season.

A lot of main characters’ lives are on the line.

Are Bellamy, Finn, or Raven alive? PLEASE LET THEM BE ALIVE!

What’s going to happen to Clarke? And where is Anya?

Season 2 will introduce a variety of new characters certainly, as well as reveal how the ground is more complex than we all thought.

It was a great two part finale! Can’t wait for The 100 to return in the fall!
