TV Review: Beauty and the Beast 2×22 “Deja Vu”

Deja Vu

Last night’s Beauty and the Beast season finale has actually been my favorite to date. It had its cons which I didn’t love, but overall it left me much more satisfied.

Let’s begin!

Gabe has turned himself into a beast as he thinks this is the only way to protect Kat from Vince. However, we’re all aware that he’s just an obsessive psycho in love. You don’t literally rip out the heart of one of the best friends of the girl you love. Which, by the way, Kat didn’t really break down over. Sure, she gasped, clasped her hand over her mouth and tear up, but then moved on to form a plan. Kat probably realized what we did; Beth was extremely annoying.

Beth was the first stop on Gabe’s killing spree. He quickly tore apart FBI Agent Knox, Kat and Vincent’s only ally. Gabe was pushing every button to get Vincent to try to kill him. He knew that he was much stronger because of the proto-type DNA he injected himself with. If he got Vincent to try to kill him, Vincent would cross the line and lose his humanity—the one thing that makes him different.

Meanwhile, Kat kept looking to her ancestors for answers. You see, her ancestor Rebecca Reynolds had her own beast she loved, Alistair. She also had another beast after Alistair, who was trying to make the whole city believe he was a terrible and dangerous person. Eerie, but history seemed to be repeating itself through Kat, Vince and Gabe. Kat assumes it’s her responsibility to protect Vincent from losing his humanity and incarcerates him with the gem that paralyzes his power. She believes it’s her destiny as well to kill Gabe. The thing is that in the end Rebecca’s plan to kill the other beast on her own actually got Alistair killed.

Kat realizes that she can’t do this on her own and returns to get Vincent. They’re a true power couple.

It was good to see Kat realize that she doesn’t have to be the heroine rescuing everyone on her own. Being strong is also about trusting the people you love.

Kat’s dad, Mr. Reynolds tells Kat that it seems that Vincent is different from other beasts. He’s escaped the point of no return because their love allows him to remain humane.

But Gabe has decided to target Vincent where it will really hurt—JT. He attacks him and leaves him hanging in his apartment almost in crucifix form—creepy!

Vince and Kat arrive; Vincent is obviously enraged. Tess is emotionally floored. Although it’s a little late, she realizes that she’s been taking JT for granted, closing herself off from being open and affectionate with him. I guess that would explain the awkward scenes of them together as a couple.

Kat and Vince spring into action to stop Gabe. The whole precinct is on alert ready to arrest Gabe. They also have all of the evidence that JT was able to pile together. But only Vince will be able to get close enough to Gabe to lure him in.

Gabe and Vincent meet in an empty pool hall and begin to battle it out. Just when Gabe has the advantage on Vincent, ready to dig his claws into his neck, Kat jumps in.

She straps the gem necklace on Gabe’s neck and his beasty abilities are hindered. However, it doesn’t stop him from pouncing on Kat. In self-defense, Kat holds up a baseball bat that ends up piercing through Gabe’s stomach as Kat fell backward. He’s instantly dead. And I’m left wondering; can that really happen in real life?

But, it’s over! Gabe is gone!

His death seemed a little too quick and rushed but given that they’ve been on his chase for the past few episodes, I’ll let it slide.

Kat’s boss at the precinct will begin an investigation, but Vince is off the hook and Kat has been reinstated as a NY detective.

JT is still battling at the hospital. They’ve told Tess that he’s lost too much blood and won’t make it. JT is the show’s most loveable character. I found it extremely gutsy that the writers would have killed him off. He’s the group’s brains and Intel. Not to mention Vincent’s BFF and now Tess’s lover. Though he’s not one of the lead characters, without JT the show wouldn’t be the same.As these thoughts all raced through my head, JT’s life machine began to beep. Kat, Vince and Tess all ran to his room to find him smiling and greeting them with “What’s up!? Did we win?” He’s miraculously recovered! How?

It’s the agents that signed Vincent out of jail and got him exoneration. They’ve been working on a new blood cell that no one in the medical field even knows about, and it just saved JT’s life. Smooth move, BATB writers.

They don’t seem like the bad guys. In fact they’ve been watching Kat and Vince for a while and want to recruit them. It seems to be insinuated that there’s more than just beasts out there that need to be captured and they sure could use Kat and Vincent’s help. More than just beasts?! Did BATB just open Pandora’s Box on more supernatural creatures created by government?!

Vincent and Kat are going to take their time to think about it. After all, they’ve been through quite a lot.

It was nice to see them enjoying each other, living in the moment. Quite refreshing that the writers allowed Kat and Vince to end a season finale without impending doom breathing down their necks.

I don’t need a happy ending to enjoy a season finale. But because Kat and Vince never seem to get one, I’m glad the writers granted them one this time around.

And the whole ancestor flashbacks—I’m not sure I totally enjoyed it. I love flashbacks and family history tying into the present, really, I do! But, it seemed a little forced how everything was being paralleled to the tee. However, I highly appreciate BATB’s effort to do something out of their comfort zone! I actually loved that they tried! So, I wouldn’t mind if they worked on it a bit and did it again. Here’s to more flashbacks in the following season!

All in all—a solid finale!

We have to wait for the fall to see the choice that Vince and Kat make. We know those two can hardly stay out of trouble.

What do you think about the new agents? Can they be trusted?

Any guesses on what else could be out there?

Until the Fall, Beasties!
