Book Review: Guilt by Degree” by Marcia Clark

9780316129541_p0_v1_s260x420“Guilt by Degrees” is another suspenseful Rachel Knight Novel by Marcia Clark that hit it out of the park. This novel consisted of the characters I fell in love with in the previous story but nonetheless were able to stand on their own if anyone decided to skip the first novel, “Guilt by Association”. This story uncovers another mystery that consists of three friends; Rachel, Bailey, and Toni all working from different perspectives to insure safety and justice in their city.

This story begins when Rachel decides to interfere with a case that is not in her jurisdiction because she got heated about the subject. She thought it was selfish for the court to easily give up on a John Doe homicide because this particular John Doe was a homeless man rather than a high class socialite. As she volunteers herself to work on a case with little to no evidence on the killer or the victim she tag-teams her strong-minded detective Bailey to help her out of this beautiful mess she concocted. As Toni tries to make sense of everything going on at the office Rachel and Bailey go off on what seems to be an endless mouse hunt. First they have no evidence that someone attacked the man because no surveillance videos pick up a clear view. Afterwards they start looking for a mystery woman who seems to have fallen off the edge of the world.

While Rachel is out trying to get justice for this man her office is using her impulsive pick of a case to attack the small special unit department in which she works in. Stating that Rachel is not only forgoing her assigned cases but that the cases she is being assigned does not keep her busy therefore the department should be let go. With only one day left before her boss stops this case Bailey is able to uncover the fact that John Doe might actually turn into a special unit case because of his real identity.

Different stories, lives, and characters offer insight on the truth about this not so John Doe homicide that you can’t help but get emotionally attached to. The pages of this story are filled with mystery. It is like trying to complete a puzzle with both complex and missing pieces. Even so it was fun to travel into this story and try to figure out the ins and outs before the beautiful duo did. I can’t wait to see what kind of life-altering death entrapping catastrophe Rachel Knight is going to find herself in next…
