Dissonance first caught my eye when I was searching books that were being released this month. I saw the beautiful cover and read the goodreads synopsis and I decided I had to read this book. Parallel worlds branching off with every choice playing out what could have been? Sounds awesome. Sign me up.
Delancy Sullivan comes from a family of Walkers. They’re the people who navigate the parallel worlds that branch off from other people’s decisions and keep them in harmony with the key world.
When a training session in a parallel world goes terribly wrong however, Del finds herself suspended from walking. Even though Del’s world is full of rules, she’s never been one to follow them. She continues walking despite her suspension, trying to figure out what went to wrong in those other worlds.
Something strange is going on and she thinks it may have something to do with the fact that she keeps falling for different versions of the same guy, Simon Lane, in her walks. A guy that she has a crush on in real life but who doesn’t know she exists. What Del doesn’t realize is that her actions have consequences that could threaten the fate of the entire multiverse.
As great as the premise sounded, Dissonance started off quite slow. Del’s world full of walkers and echo’s, dissonance and cleavings was just plain difficult for me to understand. I spent the first third of the book just trying to figure out what was going on. I think that the world that was created in this novel, though an interesting one, was a bit too complicated. I decided to push past my confusion and continue reading, but I’m not sure that everyone will.
I’m glad that I continued reading, because Dissonance was an enjoyable read. The further I got into the book, the more attached I became to the story. The most interesting parts of the beginning of the book were Del’s interactions with Simon’s echo’s. He didn’t know who she was in real life but in many different parallel universes he was drawn to her.
As the story progressed it got more complicated yet easier to understand which was a relief. Delancy was an unabashed rule breaker which made her an interesting main character. Her best friend Elliot was kind of adorable. Simon Lane was definitely adorable as the ever charming love interest. Her sister was honestly just kind of awful. As a sister myself I could NEVER see myself betraying my sister in some of the ways that she did. Del’s semi-crazy grandfather, Monty, was one of my favorite characters.

When I got to the end of Dissonance I was hooked. I couldn’t stop reading. But, the ending felt kind of chaotic and rushed. I didn’t like a few of the things that happened. As a first book in a series Dissonance was good but I’m not sure if it will be good enough for me to stay interested long enough to wait for the next book to be released. Right now I’m still invested because I just finished reading but I don’t think I will be in a couple months time which is kind of disappointing. I think Dissonance is the type of book series that will be best enjoyed once all of the books are released and can be read at once.
