Book Review: ‘Breathe’ by Elena Dillon

cover52361-mediumAre you ready to fall madly in love with the whirlwind of young love, the dangers of murder, and the innocence of a girl who decides she needs to protect her family and be strong enough for all of them? This story can empower anybody who has ever been hurt in their life, and exemplifies ways that young love can mature into something deeper when nurtured and given room to grow.

For Jasmine, moving to a new state, a new house, a new school, and having no friends was the opportunity she needed to finally take a breath after two years of media hell. The nonstop burden her family had been spun into because of her sister’s death by an unknown killer never eased up. So her mother decided the only way to spare the lives of her three other children was to move. Jasmine and her twelve-year-old twin siblings went down to Southern Louisiana to start what they hoped to be a new life. A new place can’t stop the nightmares and panic attacks for Jasmine, though – her biggest fears are still the dark and being alone, the latter of which inappropriately happens on her first day in front of Wal-Mart. As she tumbles onto the floor like her usual quirky self, a handsome boy with a smile that’ll make you drop dead catches her! Talk about being swept off your feet!

Easton is the boy with the southern charm, good looks, and athletic build that’ll make any girl in high school go a little too crazy. Unfortunately for the girls, Easton was never interested in anybody until Jasmine came along with her beautiful smile, mysterious ways, and hidden past. Unlike other novels, this story goes in-depth about all the ways that Easton falls head over heels in love with Jasmine. This was a perk in the book that made me fall in love with Easton, too!

Jasmine is afraid to tell anybody the truth about her past. The last thing she wants is to be pitied, but as things start to look up for her family, her friends, her school, Easton, and even herself, a few pranks at school push everything to the edge. What will Jasmine do next?

Does she really think these pranks have nothing to do with the killer who murdered her sister, or is she just trying to keep a brave face? What if all her lies and truths fall into the laps of the people she has grown to love and they reject her? What if the only way to save her family now is to sacrifice herself?
