TV Review: Nashville 3×2 – “How Far Down Can I Go”

CONNIE BRITTON

Nashville’s third season is looking like it’s going to be a solid one.

Rayna is putting in hard work to get her record label, Highway 65, to grow. She’s gotten a new space for her label and her album is number one! That is until Will catapults her from her reigning spot after only one week at the top. She’s finding that the music business isn’t what it used to be, and to continue as the queen of country she must explore new opportunities outside of her comfort zone.

Luke is all about business, and even though one would think that it’s awkward to go on tour with the man who just proposed to his fiancé, he didn’t allow Deacon to back out of his contract. Does Luke have ulterior motives? I mean, can Luke really be that nice of a guy? Sorry, but I’m not totally sure about him!

The most affected by all of this is Maddie, unfortunately. Deacon has had to learn how to manage with her teenage mood swings and hormones. Dealing with Maddie’s attitude isn’t easy when his heart is still shattered after Rayna chose to marry Luke. It’s going to be interesting seeing Deacon go on tour with Luke. The attraction that Rayna and Deacon have is unbeatable, and I wonder how long Luke can keep it all about “business.”

Meanwhile, though Will may be at the top of his professional career, his personal life is certainly going down the drain. Layla has been an emotional wreck ever since Will decided to be honest and come out to her. Unfortunately, a quick divorce won’t be possible since they’re bound by a contract to continue filming for their reality show. Not to mention that the TV show has Will’s confession on tape—which could destroy Will’s career. Layla is not only heartbroken, but she’s also frustrated with her own lack of a career and has now manipulated Will into making sure she achieves success. Certainly Layla’s viciousness hadn’t disappeared like we all thought. Of course, Will did her wrong but she’s always been fame hungry.

She’s even more furious now after she totally flopped the Patsy Cline biopic audition that Jeff was able to get for her. On the other hand, Juliette killed her call-back audition and immediately got the part!

Back at Gunnar’s house, it didn’t take long for him and Scarlett to instantly reconnect—musically that is. These two never fail to be great together. But I actually really loved them together as a couple too. Zoey sees it too! She’s been freaking out ever since Gunnar returned from making sure Scarlett didn’t leave Nashville. Even though he asked her to move in, the moment she saw them singing together her insecurities sparked up. She basically said yes to Gunnar out of spite. I think right now Gunnar genuinely cares for Zoey, but the pull that Scarlett and Gunnar have together has always been incredibly strong. Zoey’s not the only one wondering what’s going to happen when Gunnar is alone when she’s on tour with Juliette Barnes.

That is, if Juliette is able to still go on tour.

Avery has been trying to move on from Juliette, but he’s still hurting. He totally disregarded the new Blue Bird Café waitress who was throwing herself at him. That is until Juliette returned everything she had of Avery’s and they had a screaming match in his hallway about how they would both move on.

They’re clearly still in love with each other, but just in too much pain! Ugh, these two need to work it out! It was a great scene where Hayden Panettiere and Joshua Jackson once again showed off their acting chops! Even when they’re fighting it’s those kinds of scenes that prove how Avery and Juliette need to be together!

Unfortunately for us fans, Avery decided to hook up with the desperate waitress out of revenge after the blowout with Juliette.

What Avery doesn’t know is that Juliette found out something that could change his life forever. As you all know, last week it was revealed that Juliette was pregnant and the paternity of the father was up in the air. The only time she hadn’t been careful was a month ago when she was with Jeff. As she’s being examined, ready to have an abortion, she’s informed that the baby is actually eight weeks old! Which means that it’s definitely Avery’s!

And as this news was delivered, I literally screamed for joy!

I connected with Juliette’s happy tears because who in the world would want Jeff Fordham to be their baby daddy? He is SO gross and just the biggest jerk in the Nashville’s music industry. His boss is right; does he have a problem with women? He has consistently been condescending and begrudging to them.

Anyways, he’s not the baby’s father and that is the biggest relief.

I appreciate that Nashville isn’t dragging out the important plot points and is going at a faster pace than it previously did.

You could see in her eyes that the fact that the baby was Avery’s was changing her mind right then about the abortion. So I’m guessing she’s keeping the baby now.

I truly loved how this episode ended, because it gave closure to the question we were all wondering about but it also opened up room for so many other questions to arise.

How is Juliette going to tell Avery that she’s pregnant—with his baby?

Will Avery even believe Juliette?

Is this new waitress going to cause problems between them mending their relationship?

Juliette’s taking on a new acting gig – how’s her pregnancy going to affect her big career-defining role?

It was a nice move by the Nashville writers!

So, let me hear your thoughts!
