Reign is back!
The season kicks off right after Francis has left French court and the Black Plague has been spreading rampant. With Francis gone from the castle, Mary is left with the task of calming everyone in court and doing everything she can to stop the spreading of the disease. Katherine is by her side, and it’s been quite interesting seeing the power that she’s had to relinquish to Mary as the new Queen of France.
We also have the return of clean-shaven Nostradamus! Though I am a lover of beards, the clean look fits Nostradamus well and I’m just glad he’s back in court!
Greer has quite a surprise when he sees Leith bonding with Lord Castleroy’s daughter, Ivette. Leith honestly doesn’t have any idea who she is, but Greer is worried that he is trying to keep his vow of becoming a rich and successful man and flaunting it in her face by using Ivette. Greer goes so far as asking Leith not to meet up with Ivette because she wouldn’t be able to bear having Leith as her son-in-law and near her for the rest of her life. Things can get pretty awkward in French Court at times! Leith is a good man and agrees to decline Ivette’s invitation. Leith is severely disappointed with Greer’s choices, but it doesn’t mean that all of his feelings have dissipated, and it’s evident as he grants her her wish.

Meanwhile, the disease is spreading everywhere. Francis finally arrives at Lola’s cabin and finds her and the baby alive. However, the servants in the cabin begin to get sick and they must flee for their lives along with the baby.
All the roads are being closed down, and Francis thankfully finds a distant cousin named Louis who helps him and Lola remain safe while they’re able to return to the castle. Which brings up the decision of what to do with the baby. Lola would much rather go far away from court. Having given birth to Francis’ first-born baby boy means that Lola would have responsibilities in court that she would severely dread. Not to mention the tension she would be causing between Francis and Mary. As much as Mary and Lola are friends at the end of the day, there will be a struggle!
Back at court, the “Real France” is being revealed to Mary. She is going to understand how even though she may be Queen by blood, her power really comes to her from the nobles. The nobles provide almost all of the services to the castle; without them they’re doomed to die in this Plague.

It’s tearing Mary apart because as she takes more lives, it draws her away from the Queen she wants to be and the one who will make Francis proud. It’s obvious that this season we will be seeing many new characters as the nobles will be showing much more of themselves in court.
Nostradamus has gone to search for Lola and Francis and finds the cabin where they stayed marked with an “X”, infected with the plague, and in flames. Katherine immediately jumps to the conclusion that everyone will look to her younger child, Charles, as the next King of France. As Mary sees her hunger for power, she teams up with Nostradamus to give her a dose of medicine that will give her fake symptoms of the plague. The dose will last long enough to give Mary time to sort things out with the nobles’ threats and families.

However, Lord Edward gets ahead of her and poisons a whole household of nobles, where Ivette happened to be, too. Mary decides to lock Lord Edward in one of the dungeons where those who are infected reside. We will have to see if this decision will prove to be the right one. Maybe it was the righteous decision for Mary, but it could cause more problems, as Lord Edward was the son of Lord Narciss, a powerful noble who controls many of the lands and holdings that help the castle.
The castle will go through a reckoning. It seems many of those who have died will remain at the castle as ghosts, as one of them warns Bash. Poor Bash hates himself for having brought on the Plague after his defeat of the Darkness last season.
Many things will change in the castle. Louis had offered Lola and the baby a spot on his boat to the Netherlands, and Francis had agreed. Not once had he even touched his son because of the resentment that he had towards Lola’s decision not to inform him. He knows that having them leave is the easiest and best thing to do for everyone. But as the baby starts crying alone in his tent, Francis holds him in his arms to comfort him. It’s that one encounter with Francis that changes his mind about everything. He can’t let Lola leave with his son, the only son he could have, as Mary is still to conceive. In all honesty, it’s pretty hard for Mary to be able to conceive with all the stress she’s been going through.
Things will get interesting this season!
To be honest, this first episode wasn’t too exciting, as it dealt primarily with legality between royals and nobles. It lacked a bit of action, even with the Plague spreading everywhere. But it was a decent episode to set up the groundwork for the rest of the season.
I’m excited to see Francis’ return with Lola to the castle!
