TV Review: Nashville 3×8 “You’re lookin at Country”

WILL CHASE, CONNIE BRITTON

It was all about the CMAs this week in Nashville.

Everyone was in attendance at the CMAs. Well, except for Scarlett and Deacon who decided to watch the awards from home with a box of pizza. Needless to say, they were both rooting for Rayna.

Nothing like an awards show to bring couples together…or tear them apart.

Things got a bit tense before the awards began as Rayna discovers Luke’s prenup. It bugged her a lot since she assumed that Luke knew she wasn’t the type of woman to ransack a man’s belongings.

This episode got to show more of Luke… I’ve kept insisting that there’s more to this guy than meets the eye. I don’t know what it is but there’s something about him that just doesn’t sit easy with me. It turns out that if you put a few drinks in him for all of his narcissism to pour out.

Rayna was stacking up the awards, even beating out Luke in some categories. This wasn’t sitting very well with Luke and the drinks only magnified how much of a jerk he was being. But, more on that later.

Another couple who had some tension at the CMAs was Will and Layla. Will gives Layla a pep talk but it all falls apart when the reporters keep treating Layla like a bimbo—thanks to their reality show. I feel for Layla she’s just in a really troubled place but I love the fact that at least she’s letting Will be there for her. There’s true love between them even if it’s not the kind that Layla was hoping for.

Teddy went solo to the CMAs until she ran into her escort friend who he’s apparently caught serious feelings for. Does he not comprehend what this could mean for his political career?! I think it’s time to start making bets for how long until his illegal activity with prostitutes makes headlines. Oh, the special fun fact for this episode was that Eric Close, the actor who plays Teddy Conrad, directed it. I must say he did a pretty great job!

Someone else who remained solo throughout the awards show was Sadie Stone. Most of what we’ve seen from this character is her new affiliation with Rayna since she’s joined Highway 65. She also won new artists of the year winning out to Will. But we got to know a little bit more about her past when she gets a text from her ex-boyfriend who’s asking for cuts from her hit single. The jerk figures that since he inspired it he should get some money from it too. Luke (with a few drinks in) comforts Sadie and for some reason I’m smelling a spark brewing. The way that Luke stares at Sadie during her performance makes me think that Sadie could be his new rebound when things get tough with Rayna. It would make much more sense for the introduction of her character and Nashville loves to create awkward love triangles.

Luke is having an incredibly hard time dealing with all of Rayna’s success. The whiskey in Luke’s system revealed that deep down he did feel that all of Rayna’s wins had to do with the fact that she’s in a relationship with him. He does go as far as saying that her album did well because he happened to propose to her on that same day– ouch.

It wasn’t just Rayna winning that got Luke this way. It didn’t help that Rayna’s speeches included thanking both of her exes’ work on her album, Liam McGuinness and Deacon Claybourne. But despite Luke’s fussy tantrums Rayna knew how to keep her cool and remained classy as ever. Her speech as she accepted Entertainer of the Year was perfection: “To all the female artists out there who are paving the way for generations to come. And to my man, my love, Luke. I share this with you babe. What’s mine is yours. And to all the men out there, just remember we’re never trying to take anything from you, there’s plenty of sunshine for all of us.”

The perfect reminder as to why we can’t help but love Rayna! Hopefully that helps Luke come down a few notches.

But Deacon sends Rayna a congratulatory text after the awards are over and let’s just hope that Luke isn’t the kind to check her phone. If not—all hell will break loose y’all! Regardless, you bet that this will cause a stir up as Luke and Rayna’s wedding approaches. Because let’s be real when does Deacon NOT step in the moment Rayna’s about to make a major decision.

Meanwhile, Micah went missing for a pretty large portion of the awards show. It’s sort of all Zoey’s fault since she was too busy speaking with Jeff who’s suddenly interested in signing her to Edgehill. The thought of stardom was enough for Zoey to push her step-mom duties aside. Micah got lost in the bathrooms and so Gunnar missed he was award for “Ball and Chain”. But this also caused for Zoey to finally be honest with Gunnar—she’s not into the whole motherhood thing right now. A valid point. I understand that she didn’t sign up to be a caretaker but at the same time I wish she would’ve been a bit more understanding with Gunnar after he’s left with his nine year old son who he met just a few weeks ago. But Zoey chose her dreams and so her and Gunnar are no longer an item. I’m kind of hoping Gunnar and Scarlett can give it another go.

As one couple crumbles another is on the road to restoration. We can only hope!

Juliette has to meet Avery’s parents at the CMAs and let’s just say that Avery’s dad is a royal pain in the arse. All that man does is tear down his son with his harsh critical words. He then proceeds to judge Juliette’s upbringing without even having known her for more than five minutes. His judgments of her future abilities as a mother cause Juliette to spiral for a moment into flashbacks of her childhood and druggie of a mother.

However, Avery is quick to pull her back from the emotional black hole. They’re not their parents and they won’t make the same mistakes with their daughter—yes, it’s a girl! Avery stands up to his father and finally puts him in his place. I’m just so ecstatic to see these two as parents because I have a feeling they’re going to be surprisingly great ones!

They return to Juliette’s place and it’s obvious that feelings between Juliette and Avery are still there. Juliette shows that she’s still has game when she asks Avery to zip down her dress since she’s unable to. Nice move! As Avery does so he forces himself to pull away and it’s evident that he’s fighting his feelings full force. But it won’t be long before these two connect once again!

Say “I” if you can’t wait for the reunion! “I!”

Let’s see what happens in Nashiville as the “Ruke” wedding approaches!

Do you think Rayna will begin to have doubts?

What stunt will Deacon pull?

Is Luke becoming too intrigued by Sadie?

Will Juliette and Avery hook up at the wedding? Maybe?
