Are Jane and Rafael moving too fast? The question came to mind last night when The CW served us another eventful episode of Jane the Virgin.
It starts at the beginning of the episode, when we’re taken five-ish years back in the past, and we once again see how different Jane and Rafael are. Jane was motivated—still is—with an ambitious five-year plan, and Rafael had nothing planned past a vacation. As we now know, they’ve changed, maybe not Jane so much, but Rafael certainly has.
Therefore, you can’t blame Jane for being skeptical of Rafael, especially as she finds out about everything that has been happening around the hotel. You see her face as she realizes how straight-up “telenovela” her life has become. Michael drops the news that Rose is actually Sin Rostro, and everything becomes crazier from there. We find out that my theory about Roman Zazo having a (very Zen) twin brother is correct, and Petra is trying to kick out Rafael from the hotel now that she owns a third of it.
The drama may be at an all-time high, but the laughs are definitely abundant. One of the funniest scenes is when Luisa escapes the psychiatric ward with the help of her silent roommate Betty. When one of the nurses is distracted, Luisa makes her escape, and with one last farewell to Betty, she almost gets caught. Betty lets out a wailing scream that distracts the other nurse, and Luisa makes a run for it. If it weren’t funny enough, once she’s out the door she bumps into Rafael, who is there to sign her out. She makes her way back in.
Rogelio is still struggling over his next career move. He could star in his own show, but it shoots in Mexico, or he can take a supporting role in his nemesis’ show, which means he doesn’t need to move. He’s waiting for Xiomara to ask him to stay, and Xo is waiting for him to say he wants to stay for her. Jane takes up the role as “couple therapist” and finally encourages them to share their feelings. They do, and it’s the funny and endearing moment we’ve been waiting for between Xiomara and Rogelio.
Rose leaves a note for Luisa with a clue to where her father is. They find his body, and Rafael doesn’t let himself grieve, he moves straight to business, worried that Petra will take advantage of the situation. Jane tries to make him stop for a moment, but he won’t.

Back to Jane and Rafael, their relationship runs into some hiccups in this episode. Jane is overwhelmed by all the drama in his life, and knowing his past and basically not knowing him well enough at all, she doesn’t know if she can completely trust to him. When Rafael sees that, he gets mad. It’s understandable because he must be tired of always having to prove himself. Still, he has to take into account that the past few months for Jane have been way out of the ordinary for her, and he shouldn’t blame her for not trusting him. Eventually, he understands this, and the two share a sweet moment discussing their favorite things.
They’re still in way over their heads, and if next week’s episode preview is any indication, a marriage proposal is way out of line. (I mean, this is the second one Jane got this season!) I’m not looking forward when everything catches up to these two, and they realize they need a breather. Only because they have a baby on the way doesn’t mean this relationship needs to be put on fast forward. I’ve rooted for them since the beginning and only want the best for them.
The episode may end on a good note for Jane and Rafael, but a lot is still in disarray. Petra bonds with Luisa over shamans, securing the upper hand on the hotel business. Petra is amazing at how manipulative she can be. It’s hard not to respect that. Luisa takes up Rose/Sin Rostro’s offer to run away together. At least it seems like she took her up on it when she goes missing at the end. We can only wonder what Rose is up to next and how she even looks like now. (Criminal Plastic Surgery Ring, remember?)
