Film Review: TITANIC Comes Back to the Big Screen in 3D!

I must start out by saying that Titanic is my favorite movie of all time. It sounds like a typical thing coming from a girl, and maybe it is a little. Who doesn’t love a great romance? Titanic offers practically the most epic romance of all time. But I think my love for it goes beyond the romance. I first saw the film back in 1997 on its opening weekend. I was eight years old at the time, and my mom and I were so excited to see it that in a hurry to make the showing on time, we ran out of the car without taking the keys or turning off the ignition (We did lock the doors though!). I’ll never forget those three hours at the theater. I had never been so mystified by a film before. Sure, at eight years old, I didn’t understand all of it, but I knew for certain that I loved it. Titanic was so magnificent that my mom and I didn’t care that we were stranded in a theater parking lot with a dead car afterward.

It should come as no surprise that I would jump at the chance to see an early screening of Titanic in 3D. At first, I was skeptical of director James Cameron’s decision to re-release the film in 3D. Obviously, it’s an easy money grab. But would it enhance the film? I wasn’t so sure. I’m not a fan of post-conversion 3D. Many times, it’s tackily done. Yet, this is James Cameron, the guy directed Avatar which has stunning 3D visuals. I trusted him to do right by Titanic. Luckily, he did. Titanic 3D is pretty excellent. The visuals are crisper. It’s not the obnoxious kind of 3D where stuff is thrown at you. It’s almost worked seamlessly into the film. There are a couple scenes where it looked a little awkward. One scene where Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) are trying to outrun a wave of water below deck was weird. It seemed for a second that Rose’s face was detached. The odd combination of the lighting and 3D effect did that.

Overall, the 3D was pretty cool. I was a little surprised because I felt like I was watching it for the first time. I’m not sure if the extra dimension made me feel that way or because I hadn’t watched the film in a couple years. I own the movie on VHS, which is in a box buried in my closet with other tapes. I can’t stand watching Titanic on TV. All those commercial breaks drive me nuts. In my opinion, the best way to see Titanic is coming up this April. An epic movie of this scale is totally worth seeing on the big screen. It’s especially perfect for my generation and younger ones that never got a chance to see it in theaters. My parents were cool with letting an 8 year old seeing it, but I know many of my friends who weren’t allowed. Don’t miss an opportunity to see Titanic 3D on the big screen!

Titanic 3D comes out Wednesday, April 4^th in theaters and IMAX.
