TRON: Legacy

“TRON: Legacy” is a really cool movie. That’s the best way to describe it. The movie is a nice contrast to the other slew of films being released that are mostly Oscar-bait.

The film is the sequel to “TRON,” which came out in 1982, a time before many of us young folks were born. But don’t fret! You don’t need to see the first one to understand this one. After Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) has been missing for years, his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), is very bitter about everything his father left behind, including a huge technological corporation called Emcon. When Sam decides to revisit his dad’s old office, he somehow gets himself transferred into The Grid. The Grid is sort of this different cyber dimension. When Sam finds out that his father has been stuck in The Grid for all these years, he tries to find a way to get his father, himself, and Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a girl who is key to helping our universe, out of The Grid.

Major props go to Joseph Kosinski for re-creating an amazing looking universe. If you have seen the first “TRON,” you will VASTLY appreciate the new effects. It is so easy to get lost in the effects, watching the lights moving across the screen. It is almost distracting from the storyline. As for the plot, it’s not the strongest or best one it could be, but it was satisfying enough.

The only weird thing about the movie was the “young” Jeff Bridges. They used CGI to create a 1982 version of him. It’s pretty much impossible to make a CGI human look actually human. He seemed too wax-like.

Daft Punk did an excellent job on the music. Besides the fact that their sound goes perfectly with a movie like this, they created a great soundtrack that made the film much more enjoyable. They also made a cameo in the movie. If anything, check out the soundtrack for this movie!

Overall, I recommend seeing “TRON: Legacy,” especially in IMAX 3D. The 3D is subtle, which in my opinion is better than having things pop in your face all the time. If you don’t want to spend the extra money for 3D, I’m pretty sure seeing it in 2D will be just as eye-popping.

“TRON: Legacy” will be released in theaters December 17th. You can purchase the soundtrack by Daft Punk at the TYF Store here!
