I Love You, Phillip Morris

“I Love You, Phillip Morris” has been waiting for theatrical release for awhile. It was supposed to be released this past summer, but was postponed. Now, it’s finally in theaters, and it’s one of the most interesting comedies and love stories around.

“I Love You, Phillip Morris” is based off the true story about how and why Steven Russell escaped a Texas jail numerous times between the 1980s-90s. After being happily married and having a kid, Steven (Jim Carrey) has an epiphany and decides to be open with his homosexuality. When he starts living openly as a gay man, he realizes that the lifestyle is really expensive. Hence, he becomes a con artist, which ultimately lands him in jail. While in prison, he meets Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor) and falls in love with him. When Steven gets out of jail, he finds a way to get Phillip out of jail (illegally). Even when Phillip gets out, Steven still can’t let go of his con artist ways, which ends up testing his relationship and determination.

This is a new kind of role for Jim Carrey. He plays a different type of funny guy, and he does it right. I wish I could see him getting more recognition for this role. Carrey really stretches out his comedic skills in this film. Ewan McGregor plays the sweet and gentle Phillip Morris wonderfully too. I’m surprised that they didn’t at least get some Golden Globes nominations. But I won’t get started on how completely unfair the Hollywood Foreign Press have been with choosing Globe nominations.

“I Love You, Phillip Morris” is a very unorthodox love story. Part of it is because it’s a gay romance, the other part is the prison setting. However, it offers some touching moments, clever scenarios and funny scenes. If you’re looking for a different kind of film this season, check out this movie.

“I Love You, Phillip Morris” is now playing in select theaters.
