Book Review: ‘Aoléon the Martian Girl Part 4’ by Brent LeVasseur

Aoléon and Gilbert have become the Luminon’s top priority in stopping the Martian resistance movement. After being chased by the Royal Paladin Guard, they are forced to flee the Martian Megalopolis. Aoléon, Gilbert and Zoot escape with the help of Bizwat and his newly-found friend, Helios, a first-generation soldierbot. 

After their saucer is destroyed, they crash land somewhere in the deep Martian desert. They set out to locate Kyrios and the secret base where Aoléon’s parents are being held captive. 

After battling the forces of nature, starvation, and a Klyklon dust storm (not to mention a giant slor that almost swallows them alive), they finally make it to their destination. However, after Kyrios gives Gilbert some basic training to develop his budding psionic power, they learn that their journey is far from over. 

Will Aoléon, Glbert, Bizwat, Helios, and Zoot be able to rescue Aoléon’s parents and stop the Martian invasion of Earth in time?

 

I’m pretty sure that the fourth part of this novel read my thoughts on the previous books in the series.

In the fourth novel of this middle-grade sci-fi series, readers get a look at what Gilbert’s parents are up to after his disappearance. Even though they aren’t as worried as I’d expect people who just lost their one and only child to be, they have quit their fighting to deliberate over what might have happened to Gilbert. In between their discussion, the Martian invasion starts, and UFOs begin to abduct cows from Gilbert’s farm. Mr. Johnson is also affected by the invasion, as the Martian robots disrupt his barbeque.

Readers also learn just how cruel the Draconians can be. They’ve captured Aoléon’s parents and have been trying to use brutal methods to make Aoléon’s parents give up Aoléon and Gilbert’s whereabouts. We also learn how they train their warriors: from birth they leave them in the wild to fend for themselves. If they survive, they place them in the army and train them to be ruthless and merciless creatures.

Meanwhile on Mars, Gilbert, Aoléon, Bizwat, and Helios (a first generation Martian robot that Bizwat recommissioned) are running for their lives as the Luminon tries to “eliminate” them so that he can continue his invasion on Earth. The Luminon has created an army so powerful that I can’t understand why he would think that a couple of kids would ruin his plans to take over the Earth (maybe he’s watched his fair share of Scooby Doo).

Anyway, in the heroes’ attempt to escape the evil Martian leader, they find themselves in a historical Martian desert, which Aoléon gives an in-depth history lesson on. She also explains how the desert is related to the extinction of Earth’s dinosaurs, but I was so not interested in this explanation and skipped through these pages till the group came across an old man named Kyrios. At first I thought that they were just tired of walking through the desert and began to hallucinate, but this special old man holds secrets older than the universe. During the meeting with Kyrios, the old Martian teaches Gilbert how to harvest his inner powers that Terrans supposedly had years ago. He also teaches Aoléon new skills that will help her and the rest of the team to defeat the Luminon and his army.

The art in this fourth novel is just as exceptional as the last. I loved how realistic the explosion looked as the heroes made their escape from the Luminon’s henchmen. Another picture from this chapter of the series that bought my affection was the Luminon’s army. The art was detailed and really colorful, and I could imagine this entire series being an animation.

There’s only one more book in this series to go, and I can’t wait to see how the author decides to end Gilbert’s adventure. How will they stop the Luminon’s powerful army? Will Gilbert get to keep the powers he’s acquired while being on Mars? What will his parents have to say to him when he finally returns home?
