“Thinking back on my one-room shack,” this recent episode of Heroes Reborn was blah. This show has reached its limits in ridiculousness and boringness, and this episode comes without anything contextual. In a way this episode felt like a complete manipulation under Erika Kravid’s stern poise and demeanor, but while toning up her endearment to sell Tommy.
Like all episodes so far it’s disconnected tonally, structurally and technically. It’s broken apart with no edge in the story. Each individual story don’t always land, and in a episode with all the splinter cell maneuvers and a genuine teenager trying to stop a huge storm that could kill a lot of people, I sort of feel vindictive. Kind of like that feeling you get when you hate a company for cancelling your favorite show, but instead want to write them a thesis explaining why this was one of their worst investments for 2015; seriously.
The direction is very bland. Like really bland. This felt like one of those episodes where they tried to compact complexity in less than 40 minutes.
The dialogue is still as dry as eating “Cookie Crisps” without the milk. At one point you got to at least give them this, Zachery Levi makes dialogue sound genuine regardless of how stupid and generic it actually sounds on paper. Here’s the problem with that; they construct the dialogue to be too blunt, but not completely so that it doesn’t leave you thinking who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. The construct just has no mystery; every other sentence just has an abrupt end. Also every question is simply answered.
Carlos’s story on the other hand was a little more intense, in a good way, but it still suffers with the dialogue. At that point I’m caring more about the action then I am with the plot. Like who cares if there’s a mass extinction right? Ha, ha. Seriously, I somewhat liked this episode. It’s not by any means good, but it has a good chunk of positives I can live with.
It’s a shame that as I wrote this review, after viewing the episode, I forgot most of what happened in the show, even as simplistic as it is. This is “midseason finale” until January and it’s a bother because that’s one hell of a gap for just three episodes. It was bad, but at the same time some parts were actually fun to watch, even if it may have been for splits seconds or a minute.
