Book Review: See How They Run by Ally Carter

See How They Run is Ally Carter at her best. It’s got mysteries galore, new (and old) favorite characters, and even a secret society. It’s a great continuation of the world of Embassy Row that will leave you wanting more.

As Ally told me a few months ago, See How They Run picks up right where All Fall Down left off. And if it’s possible, the stakes are even higher this time…

Inside every secret, there’s a world of trouble. Get ready for the second book in this new series of global proportions–from master of intrigue, New York Times bestselling author Ally Carter.

Grace’s past has come back to hunt her . . . and if she doesn’t stop it, Grace isn’t the only one who will get hurt. Because on Embassy Row, the countries of the world stand like dominoes, and one wrong move can make them all fall down.

The twists get twistier and the turns get even more shocking in the second thrilling installment of Embassy Row.

While Grace comes in to See How They Run with more clarity, there are still many things left for her to learn. This leads Grace and her friends on a high-stakes adventure all over Embassy Row and across Adria. Noah, Rosie, Megan, and Alexei are all back, each determined to help Grace in their own way. So is Ms. Chancellor, who continuously surprises me with her awesomeness, and Dominic. And we finally get to meet Grace’s famous brother Jamie. The cast of characters is large but each holds a noteworthy role in the story.

Grace is the same strong and intriguing character from the first book and this time she has a clear purpose: figure out what her mother’s real life was, who was after her, and why. Unfortunately for her, she’s also got some serious guy trouble going on, which involves tense diplomatic relations between the US and Russia and makes things that much more difficult. There’s also the fact that she may have a target over her head and needs to find answers before more people get hurt.

One of my favorite things about Grace Blakely, and the Embassy Row series as a whole, is the inner dialogue and feelings we get to see from her. Grace has been through some really traumatic situations and that is not something that is easy to recover from. Ally Carter does a great job of exploring the thoughts, emotions, and mental state that comes from trauma and I really respect that she doesn’t just skim over the situation. As strong as Grace is, she’s also good putting on a brave face for the sake of her loved ones and we see the effect that has on her.

See How They Run introduces some really exciting and important background information: on Adria, royalty, and secrets in abundance. As the reader, you have to keep peeling back layers and layers of information to figure out what’s real and important. This keeps you invested and involved the whole time and each time you least expect it, a new twist is thrown in. It’s a lot of fun and to me, felt very reminiscent of the Gallagher Girl series (which I loved).

Ally Carter is a master at crafting plots that keep the reader guessing and she proves that once again here. See How They Run is fast-paced, suspenseful, and meaningful, and a book you won’t be able to put down easily. I love the high-stakes world of Embassy Row, the detailed storyline, and the realistic characters. I was engrossed from the first page to the very last, and I’m already looking forward to book 3 in the Embassy Row series. I highly recommend checking out See How They Run once it hits shelves on December 22, 2016.
