Film review: No Strings Attached

Gaby says:

It’s January, so the required ditzy romantic comedy must be released this month. I was pretty sure that this was going to be “No Strings Attached.” I mean, come on, Ashton Kutcher is in it! I went to this screening, thinking I wasn’t going to see anything great. My main motivating factor was that I like Natalie Portman and I was curious why she would agree to star in this supposed January dud.

I was wrong. (I’ve been realizing lately that many of my presumptions are wrong. Maybe I should stop. )

“No Strings Attached” was a joy. It was full of funny jokes, sweet moments, and pretty good acting. Ashton Kutcher plays Adam, an aspiring screenwriter trying to catch a break in Hollywood. Throughout his life, he has had random encounters with the same girl, Emma (Natalie Portman). After a drunken night, he wakes up at her apartment naked, and they get to talking. They also get to having sex. At that point, Emma suggests they become friends with benefits, and Adam agrees. Is it possible to sleep with a friend without it becoming more? Well, that’s what Adam and Emma try to find out.

The movie is really funny. We see a different side of the usually calm and composed Natalie Portman. She and Ashton have a great on-screen chemistry. Their energy emphasizes the cute and funny moments between their characters. Ludacris, Olivia Thirby, and Kevin Kline also star in the movie.

“No Strings Attached” is not another January dud. In my opinion, it’s one of the better romantic comedies to come out as of late. I actually am starting to like Ashton Kutcher. He has an interesting charm that I haven’t noticed before. Overall, it’s a great and entertaining movie to see with friends or on a date night.  Definitely check it out!

Lucy says:

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I was very skeptical. I felt as if it was going to be another lame romantic comedy, I was wrong too!

“No Strings Attached” was better than I expected! I thought it was a well-paced movie, not that many sad/serious movies that make most rom-coms boring, not at all. This was very enjoyable and you get to see Natalie Portman in a different light, enjoying herself whether making fun of Ashton Kutcher’s character naked dance or singing Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” while crying/driving/eating cupcakes.

The pop culture references throughout the movie, such as “the old guy from ‘Up'” or Lil Wayne’s infamous “Purple drank” made the whole audience laugh hysterically. Actually, everyone was laughing throughout the movie! Kutcher and Portman make an amazing on-screen couple, and to everyone’s surprise: in the movie it was the guy who fell in love first, NOT the girl! So yeah, you already know I fell in love with Ashton’s character, I mean, how could not love someone who brings you cupcakes and a “period mix”  cd when you’re on your period?!

Good acting. Funny. Great soundtrack. Love it!

So yes, if you’re down to watch a good romantic comedy, go ahead watch No Strings Attached. You’re guaranteed a laugh. And remember is Rated R so don’t get uncomfortable by looking at Ashton Kutcher’s gluteus maximus! (you know we won’t! lol)

“No Strings Attached” will be released in theaters tomorrow, January 21st.
