TV Review: Galavant 2×01-02

I don’t think any of us expected this to happen, but Galavant is back for season two! If you haven’t watched this medieval, musical comedy yet I can see how you might think the concept is a little silly, and it is, but in all the right ways. This show never takes itself too seriously, has fun throughout and is always a good time to watch. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend getting caught up, but season two still works well without having seen what came before it. Watch this show! Now, onto our spoilery review!

Things kick off with the aptly titled “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear” which mostly serves to get us caught up and set each of the characters up for the new season. Galavant and King Richard have shipwrecked and now have to start making their way back to Richard’s Kingdom. Sid is still stuck in Valencia with Queen Madalena and (now King) Gareth. The rest of the gang is hanging out with Isabella’s cousin Harry, who she is still set to marry.

The majority of this episode takes place in The Enchanted Forest, a gay bar Galavant and King Richard stumble into, which felt a little forced at times but still managed to be a lot of fun. They eventually have to escape with the help from Richard’s long lost Uncle Keith and continue onto whatever the next adventure will be. Isabella is trying to do some escaping of her own, but not having much luck. It was a nice surprise in both episodes to see the Jester getting a bit more to do, since he did escape with the group at the end of season one but was only really featured in a couple of episodes last season. In Valencia, Gareth is trying to get a little more respect and power from Madalena, enlisting Sid as his assistant. Gareth and Madalana are basically the worst ruling couple ever, which works well, all things considered.

While this first episode didn’t quite live up to season one, there were a lot of great jokes and pop culture references, probably even more than last season. Add in a little Kylie Minogue, and you’ve got yourself a party.

Princess Isabella’s famous amulet that she never takes off (but we’ve never seen before) is the central figure in episode two, “World’s Best Kiss.” When Galavant and King Richard visit a local fortune teller, they use his communication device to get in touch with Isabella (and the chef!), but technology is about as reliable as you’d expect and the call ends with Isabella thinking Galavant is disgusted by her with no intention of attempting a rescue. Of course, none of this is helped by the leading pair both dwelling on their not so fantastic kiss at the end of last season.

Well, at least Galavant managed to get King Richard back home… only to discover that his castle has gone missing. Not too surprising as King Richard, who started out as the bad guy of the series, is now one of the most enjoyable characters in the show. But I also hope this doesn’t take us too far off base, I’d like to see a bit more of the whole group interacting. Still, the series has only just begun and Sid was just thrown in the moat so is probably free to join one of the other groups at this point. I was hoping for a bit more in the catchy song categories. I didn’t dislike any of them, but so far nothing has quite lived up to my favorites of last year (“Galavant,” and “Maybe You’re Not The Worst Thing Ever”). I guess we’ll just have to wait until next week to find out where this goes.
