Alaric is on a warpath in this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries “Detoured On Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell.” I ask though, whoever is in charge of promos, why end the episode by killing off a major character and then show said character alive and jolly in the trailer for next week’s Christmas-themed episode?
Seriously though, the trailer for next week’s episode totally killed off any suspense that Damon’s cliffhanger death bought to the show.
Anyways, back to the beginning of the episode… Seline is on the run with Alaric’s twins Lizzy and Josie. Her grand plan? To make a trade-off with Cade. She wants to swap places with the twins so they can spend their lives serving Cade instead of the sirens. Even though Seline was a mastermind of disguising herself as a innocent nanny, she isn’t so bright when it comes to evading law enforcement. Caroline and Alaric quickly call the police, and an Amber Alert is put out on the missing girls, Stefan also compels the chief of police to make the girl’s case his top priority.
This quickly becomes a problem for Seline, but also for Sybil and Damon who end up joining her on the run with the girls. They get stared-down by civilians when the Amber Alert goes off on their phones, when they stop at a diner. and later on get stopped at a police road block. Seline ends up having to use her sirens song to get them out of trouble both times.Well kind of, considering the second time her trick to make the girls invisible did not work when Lizzy started complaining, causing Sybil to attack the officer killing him.
Damon’s had enough at this point and takes charge of the situation with Sybil on his side, suggesting that they do the ritual to summon Cade at the hotel they are hiding out at because they have everything they need: “a pool, some residents, some HBO.”
There are obvious rifts between Sybil and Seline that were shown in this episode. Between Sybil siding with Damon, coming with her own plan to offer Cade Damon and Stefan in place of the twins and mind-torturing Enzo, allowing Stefan to get into his head and pin-point their exact location. It seems like Sybil was sabotaging Seline’s plan right from the beginning.
It makes sense though since Sybil and Seline are basically the female versions of Damon and Stefan. Sybil will always hold resentment over her sister for forcing her into cannibalism just as Damon still hold some resentment over Stefan for forcing him into vampirism.
Meanwhile, Caroline and Alaric aren’t doing so well. They both said that they would do anything to get their girls back, and they do, which leads to some serious repercussions by the end of the episode.

Caroline tells Stefan that he can’t come with her and Alaric to save the girls because if Damon gets in the way she will kill him with no second thoughts. Stefan reluctantly allows her to go, but not before Caroline gives him back her engagement ring, saying that right now it’s all about her, her kids and Alaric. Basically Caroline is being over-dramatic Caroline.
Alaric behaved no better in this episode demanding that Stefan do “whatever it takes” to help him get his kids back, even if it means turning poor Enzo’s brains into mush. During their race to save the girls, they constantly are a step behind Seline, and it doesn’t help when Sybil offers Stefan a deal to save the girls. He has to come alone to the hotel, so he sends Caroline and Alaric to the wrong location while he tries to save the day.
This is when Alaric explodes on Caroline. Telling her that once they get the girls back, he is going to take them far away from the darkness that follows Caroline. He also brings up the fact that they aren’t actually Caroline’s kids, but his and his late fiancee Jo’s. Ouch. They end up making amends by the end of the episode, but she agrees with him that the twins have to be away from her until the whole mess with Cade is sorted out.
The episode ends with Stefan making the ultimate sacrifice for the twins. He makes a deal with Cade that him and Damon will take the place of Sybil and Seline as his servants. Caroline is crushed by this because of the June wedding. It’s all about the June wedding. Meanwhile, Damon is at the bar drinking his sorrows away when Alaric and Matt ambush him and stake him because Alaric “has to kill someone” tonight.

So is Damon dead? He looked very dead, but he shows up to the Christmas party in cheerful spirits next week, so obviously not unless next week’s episode is set in some sort of dream-world? Maybe Christmas parties are Damon’s own personal version of hell?
