This season finale took us on a whirlwind of emotions, and I am so glad that TVLand gave us a full hour to enjoy!
How many Younger fans would love for the episodes to be an hour long for season 4? I know that I would!
Anyways, let’s get to it.
Liza and the rest of her co workers head to the Hamptons for a book fair that Millennial Imprint will finally be attending! Josh meanwhile has stayed back in Brooklyn and is going through terrible Liza withdrawals. He expresses to Maggie how deeply he loves Liza and how he believes that she’s “the one” for him. He is a lovesick man, and it’s adorable to see his devotion for her. He wants to be with Liza even if it means sacrificing his dream to have a family of his own. Maggie is surprised by his statement but nonetheless encourages him not to lose her.
Josh takes this advice seriously and we’ll see its effects much later at the end of this episode.
The tension between Liza and Charles only seems to be growing more and more. Having Liza staying a few doors down from him in the hotel, walking around in a bikini, is simply not helping the situation. Liza’s curiosity of what could be with Charles will be Liza’s detriment.
Meanwhile, Kelsey is stressed out as Millennial Imprint is on the bottom of the totem pole at the Hamptons book fair. All of the attention is going towards Collin and his publishing house. The only person interested in Millennial is Emily, a reporter from Entertainment Weekly. She’s mostly interested because she wants to get her self-help labradoodle book published. Needless to say, the book is terrible but Emily knows the truth about Liza and has all the power to blow up her entire life.

Liza tries to convince Kelsey to take on Emily’s book, but she’s not biting. So Liza goes to extreme measures, which seemed out of character. She leads Kelsey out of the Millennial party and then announces how Emily has been signed on as a new author for their imprint. At first I thought this was terrible for Liza to have done even if it’s to save herself. But in hindsight, Liza really will do whatever necessary to save herself. Even if the cost is one of the most important friendships she’s had.
While Kelsey is away with Collin for the night, Liza and Charles end up a in a small bar watching Berlin play live. Was it the summer breeze in the Hamptons, their innate chemistry combined with the great nostalgic musings of “Take My Breath Away” that led to their slow dancing and lip locking? I say it’s been a long time coming, and it’s misfortunate that Liza seems to forget she’s in a committed relationship every time Charles appears.
That is, until that’s exactly what occurs. Charles is dropping off Liza at her door, and as they kiss once again, Josh sees everything. Liza’s conscious kicks in and she cuts off Charles from moving forward. But it’s too late anyway. Josh had come to the Hamptons to propose to Liza, and she walks into her hotel room to candles and pedals that spell out “Marry Me” on her bed. YEP! THAT HAPPENED!
Except Liza couldn’t find Josh anywhere, unaware of what he had witnessed right before what was supposed to be the best moment of his life. Kelsey is confused the next day since she helped him secure the room to prepare the surprise. Why would he disappear and change his mind out of nowhere? Suddenly Liza connects the dots and her lies begin to crumble on top of her.

Once they’re back in the city, Kelsey is met with a surprise in her living conditions. Lauren has asked her boyfriend to move in (into her parent’s house) and didn’t even let Kelsey know. Super rude! But you can’t get too mad at Lauren, she genuinely is a great person but also clueless about certain etiquette in the friend zone.
Kelsey needs to find a new place to live and asks Collin to crash at his place only for a few days. It unfortunately freaks him out completely! He swears that Kelsey is trying to move in for good by using a lame excuse like getting kicked out of Lauren’s. This is disappointing because why do men have to assume that all women would resort to these deceptive measures to secure a man? Ugh. I didn’t love Collin, so I’m not too sad to see him go.
Anyway, Charles apologizes to Liza at the office. He’s sorry he ever got in between a serious relationship. I’m sure he does feel sorry he ruined the night of Liza’s proposal, but nonetheless, he knew all along that Liza was not on the market! This is the true reason why I couldn’t get myself to be #TeamCharles. Attraction or not, you should never become a home wrecker, even if it does take two to tango.
Kelsey and Liza are at a “Get Real” seminar in order to sign the emotional guru as an author under Empirical. This guru is an expert at getting to the core of your emotions and what you truly want. David, Liza’s ex-husband, is actually one of the volunteers and he goes on stage claiming he wants to win his wife back. David and the guru call Liza, and in fact, it helps her realize that she TRULY does love Josh. She “really” does.

Why did a guru have to get Liza to realize her love for Josh? Was it not enough all that he has done for her? Proven himself more than worthy time and time again, Josh is keen on pointing this out when he finally agrees to speak to her.
He’s accepted her despite her secret, he accepted that she has a daughter, has even offered to pay for her tuition, has accepted that they wouldn’t have kids together and yet still she has the audacity to cheat! Josh is completely done. And you can tell by the stone cold look in his eyes that this time they’re over for real. Josh’s life is based on the structure of truth and honesty, he compromised for Liza’s secrets, but this has gone too far. Her lies have trapped her in a fantasy world where she’s become detached from the responsibility of her actions. This time, she will have to face the consequences.
She arrives back at the loft to find that Kelsey is there too, needing a place to crash. As she sees Liza walk in completely distraught she asks Liza what’s wrong. It’s in this moment that Liza decides to come clean with Kelsey… Liza has a daughter, she’s actually 40 years old. Kelsey’s confused eyes leave us hooked, biting our nails until season 4!
Other highlights from this episode: Richard and Diana’s relationship reaching new levels of intimacy. Diana is happy and stepping out of her emotional comfort zone for Richard. I’m here for it! Diana deserved some love and attention.
