This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries “The Simple Intimacy of the Near Touch” has the Salvatore brothers take a break from their Cade duties and head home to Mystic Falls to the start of where Damon and Elena’s romance began.

This episode was all about the couples starting with Bonnie who has just came back from Paris with Enzo who has given her a necklace of his blood as a token of his eternal love for her. Bonnie knows that she cannot become a vampire for the sake of Elena, but she has a realization that she would become a vampire for Enzo, so she gives him back the necklace during the Miss. Mystic Falls Pageant. By the end of the episode the couple is in an interesting position with Bonnie coming up with an alternative to one of them living longer than the other—what if Enzo took the cure? I have a feeling that their plan isn’t going to end well because where even is the cure at this point in the show? The last I remember was Katherine being forced to take it then it was gone, so I’m curious of how Bonnie is going to go about finding another cure if there is one out there.

Meanwhile, Caroline and Bonnie are working at the Miss. Mystic Falls Pageant preparing the hopeful girls when Stefan and Damon show up. Sybil is the reason behind the brothers’ appearance in Mystic Falls because she wants Damon to give her the final piece of the Charter Bell, a dangerous weapon that can kill sirens. Speaking of the bell, Seline has it hidden away and her day drinking is interrupted by Alaric’s intern Dorian who wants payback for the death of Georgie. Remember Georgie? Because I totally forgot about Alaric’s sassy intern.

Matt meanwhile is searching for the bell at Seline’s house where is in intercepted by police officers who are under Selene’s control. Matt manages to get the bell away only to find Dorian and Seline stopping him for reasons unknown. Clearly, there is more to the Charter Bell then meets the eye and Seline actually knows the true purpose of the bell which will most likely unfold during the next couple of episodes.

The core action of the episode took place at the pageant and focused on the relationship between Caroline and Stefan. Poor Seroline is going down the drain fast and I gave to give props to Caroline for putting up with Stefan’s evilness throughout the episode without totally falling apart. Stefan believes that he was made for Cade’s work so he ditches Damon, stakes him and steals the piece of the bell. He gives it to Caroline, but at a cost: he starts of turn each of the Miss. Mystic Falls Pageant girls into a vampires because he was “inspired” by Caroline’s transformation into a vampire.  One girl was turned during Stefan’s rampage before Caroline stopped him which led to an interesting conversation between a veteran vampire and a future newbie who probably won’t last long in The Vampire Diaries world.

We don’t learn the fate of the newly turned pageant contestant, but once Stefan wakes up we do learn that Caroline wants to work with him to end his deal with Cade, but Stefan has other plans—he doesn’t want out of his deal with Cade so Caroline officially leaves him.

Damon meanwhile is realizing that with Elena’s necklace he able to mess with Sybil’s mind games and stop her control over him. The episode doesn’t end in a good place for Damon though, because after he smashes Sybil in the head with the last piece of the bell (before Stefan stakes him and steals it) and takes her as his prisoner, she floods his mind with guilt over the horrible things he has done since serving Cade.

Episode Rating: 7/10
