The Iron Sisters gave our Shadowhunters some very interesting information. The best part about this group was that even though they weren’t involved too much in the episode they still did a decent amount of world building. The scenes that they were in established them enough to feel like a real group with a sense of rules and values.
This was also the group that Izzy wanted to get into her whole life, so it was disappointing that she didn’t get a chance to even go in, and that wasn’t shown enough in this episode. She was upset, but not enough for it to feel like she had truly missed out on a big opportunity. The one positive was that she was told her medicine wasn’t actually medicine, but instead vampire toxic. She was surprised, but not upset, which didn’t make any sense because that meant that Aldertree was poisoning her. She didn’t even mention that when she saw him again because she seems to be addicted to the stuff, which could be an interesting issue in the future, but not if Izzy is going to ignore the bigger issues. On that note, she secretly found out that Clary discovered a new rune. She didn’t tell Aldertree about it, so the significance of her gaining this knowledge is unclear. Maybe she’ll use this information to get more toxin in another episode.
Clary seems to be doing okay for someone who just lost her mother. It’s actually nice that she isn’t in shambles. Clary has a problem with dropping out when things get difficult, so it’s nice that she wanted to keep busy. She ended up finding out that she has no demon blood running through her system. More importantly, Cleophas told her that Valentine is going to use the Soul-Sword to cleanse the world of Downworlders, which isn’t good since some of her family and friends happen to be just that. What’s more interesting was when she found out that Shadowhunters have no better clue at what happens to people when they die than mundanes do. It’s a mystery to everyone, but one thing is clear and that’s that Shadowhunters don’t turn into angels, at least as far as the characters know. It was slightly disappointing that Clary didn’t follow up on how she discovered that rune.
On a lighter note, Alec and Magnus finally went on a date. They had a couple drinks and played a competitive game of pool, but it went downhill once the truth came out. Alec is a relationship virgin and Magnus has been with at least 17,000 people. This had a huge impact on the two of them, as it should because that’s a gigantic gap in experience. That moment also showed that the two of them haven’t really gotten a moment to really get to know each other since last season’s finally. In the end they chose to stick together, but the moment when Alec was about to leave felt unnecessary. They were clearly going to get over it, so they should’ve simply said that they didn’t care and moved on.
Meanwhile, Simon and Maia surprisingly teamed up to find Luke. Their team up turned into a little more as the two pretty much flirted with each and began to get close. They even spoke about how Luke is sort of a father figure to both of them. There was a flashback to when he first found Maia and chose to help her in the future. They eventually found Luke who was about to chomp down on some campers. What’s nice about the conversations leading up to finding him were that they revealed that werewolves are ruled by emotions. If they can’t keep them in check then they run the risk of changing and attacking people, which meant that Luke hadn’t really gotten to grieve. He’s been trying to deal with Jocelyn’s death, but he kept changing. It was such a small, but touching detail for the show to add.
Lastly, Cleophas turned out to be evil. She seemed well established in the Iron Sisters, and she even helped Clary, but it turns out she’s a member of the Circle. She killed her one sister in order to leave. Not to mention she’s also Luke’s brother! On top of that she knows that Clary can create runes. Cleophas is going to be a problem down the road.
