Audiobook Review: The Course of True Love (And First Dates) by Cassandra Clare

Course of True Love audiobook review

The Course of True Love (And First Dates) is the last installment of The Bane Chronicles and probably one of my favorites. While not as epic as the other short stories, this final one centers on two characters that Mortal Instruments have come to love (and obsess over). If you’re a Malec (Magnus + Alec) fan, this short story is your dream come true.

Magnus is getting ready for his first date with Alec Lightwood. He’s questioning the whole thing though. For one, Alec is a shadowhunter, and his race isn’t the most tolerant when it comes to downworlders like Magnus. On another level, they might not be so tolerant of homosexuality either. Second, it seems like Alec is fresh and naïve when it comes to relationships, and his crush on his shadowhunter best friend is pretty obvious. But what Magnus cannot deny is the connection the two had when they first met. Despite all his instincts, Magnus keeps his plans to go on a date with Alec, which ends up being both disastrous and wonderful.

I was entertained by this sexy and entertaining story chronicling the hijinks of Magnus and Alec’s first date. Alec is just plain adorable, and seeing him through Magnus’ eyes is very romantic. I can see why author Cassandra Clare kept this one for last. It’s a really precious—and comedic—story for two characters who are both so integral to The Mortal Instrument series. The state of their relationship in the last TMI book left us hanging, so reading this sweet story of their first date gives us, Malec fans, hope for the couple.

Torchwood actor, Gareth David-Lloyd narrates this audiobook. His British accent is unexpected since Magnus is currently in New York. Regardless, he added another new voice to the many lives of Magnus Bane. I particularly liked how his tone would soften when Magnus thought endearingly of Alec.

If you need something to help with the wait for the final TMI book, City of Heavenly Fire, The Course of True Love (And First Dates) and other Bane Chronicles offerings are the perfect remedies.
