Book Review: ‘Aoléon the Martian Girl Part 5’ by Brent LeVasseur

 

Aoléon, Gilbert, Bizwat, Helios, and Zoot make it to their final destination–Cydonia–where Aoléon’s parents are being held captive. They infiltrate a secret underground base and are confronted by a small army of sentrybots. Bizwat lends Aoléon and Gilbert some of his advanced combat skills via a psionic brain dump. However, this may not be enough to save them from overwhelming hostile forces that will do anything to stop them. 

They finally meet Pax–the Martian who originally set them out on the mission to discover the truth about the Luminon and his plans to invade Earth. However, Pax is not who he seems to be, and through a turn of events, they uncover the true power behind all that has been happening on Mars. 



 

I’ve finally reached the last novel in the Aoléon series, and it did not disappoint. It’s reached the point where our Martian and ‘Terran’ heroes are given the ultimate test: defeating the Luminon and saving Earth from further being invaded.

Somehow, as the heroes engage in the battle of their lifetime, I couldn’t help thinking of Guardians of the Galaxy and their own adventures. Both teams are trying to save the galaxy from a terrible evil. Both teams are comprised of alien species from all parts of space. Both teams are equally cute. Still, Aoléon and her team could never be as awesome as the Guardians.

However, Aoléon and her friends are still quite entertaining as they uncover secrets far beyond their lifetime, battle the mighty and frankly egotistical Xiocrom, and take on the maniacal Luminon. When they board the Xiocrom’s dwelling, they don’t expect to hear that he murdered Pax a long time ago and has been acting like him to lead the heroes to his lair. I could’ve told you this for free! How could they have trusted a hologram of a man who wouldn’t even join them in battle? How could they have trusted a hologram of a man who would ask children to battle an evil lizard-like Martian ruler? Apparently, the Xiocrom wants Aoléon and Gilbert to help him achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a god. As crazy as this being is, I loved the way in which the author animates the Xiocrom’s face. It’s like a blue electronic face that looks like a huge beehive with bright lights behind it. It’s possibly the best piece of art I’ve seen in the entire series.

Somehow, Aoléon’s crew easily turns down the Xiocrom’s offer and escapes his abode with only slight complications. By now, Aoléon has gotten back her parents and the one remaining goal left is to take down the Luminon and save Earth.

Their battle is a long one and not very entertaining. Bizwat telepathically passes on some of his training to Gilbert, who becomes a badass ninja in under ten seconds. However, he is still no match for the Luminon. The Luminon (in Pokemon terms) upgrades to level 100 right before our beloved heroes’ eyes and sheds the skin that made him appear like a Martian. What’s left is a demonic-looking creature with dragon wings, which seriously freaked the freak out of me. Gilbert is no match for him and suffers some terrible wounds but, thankfully, Bizwat’s secret service team came to the rescue. The team actually manages to send the cows that got abducted back to Earth and murder the Luminon. This part got me really anxious because the entire time I was like, “What about Gilbert?! They can’t let him die! This is a kid’s book. It has got to have a happy ending!”

Eventually, Aoléon goes over to Gilbert and does her hocus pocus stuff and Gilbert becomes conscious again. By this point I was like, “Thank God! I totally knew the author wouldn’t kill Gilbert. I so wasn’t worried.” Anyway, Gilbert figures that since Earth isn’t in danger and the evil Martian leader is dead, it’s time for him to go home. Aoléon uses her ship to drop Gilbert back in the field she took him from, and the two say their goodbye.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this series. It was the perfect amount of action with a well-thought-out plot. I wonder whether the author will decide to continue the series or start a new one?
